[Benkert] The 49ers offense doesn’t adjust protections they just throw hot.

Other teams know this and can force their hand in critical situations just like we saw in the Super Bowl last year.

It’s mind blowing stuff that a simple flipper would fix.

  1. Kyle is a terrible OC.

He does a good job of drawing up plays, but an absolute garbage job of calling them based on situation and garbage job of making any adjustments based on what the defense is doing.

  2. Shanahan refuses to adjust and it’s why all of our losses are the same. Someone needs to hold him accountable for that

  3. That might be ’cause Kyle doesn’t allow their QB to audible his calls. That might worked in 22 and 23 seasons, but this season is being an absolute trash

  4. Kyle has become stagnant and stubborn, refuses to learn from his failures or adapt to modern defenses. It’s either we get an OC to ease the pressure off kyle whether he likes it or not or we get ben johnson next year.

  5. Definitely feels that the defenses have figured out how to play the 9ers pass game. Everything from everyone is looking awkward af. Nobody jelling. Stat that supports that is that purdy is now holding the ball longer than any qb in the league, almost a full second longer than last year

  6. Adjusting protection is usually the center’s job, and Brendel pretty much always looks overwhelmed out there.

We used to cover it up with trickier play calling but Kyle’s lost a step and the guys who created optionality for us (Deebo/CMC) are not nearly as quick and elusive as they have been.

  7. Yea, nothing more hurtful than watching another D coordinator dial up a blitz on 3rd and long forcing BP to throw short of the sticks.

EVERY.SINGLE. TIME. When all we need is 1 more 1st down.

If our guys cant get YAC we are toast.

  8. For a subreddit that dog piled on Cohn in the post about Grant questioning why Kyle doesn’t let Brock call shit at the line, there seems to be a LOT of people that agree with him in this thread.

I think Cohn is a broken clock on his best days, but man the venn diagram of people here who think Cohn has bad takes and the people who agree with the takes when said by someone else is a perfect circle.

  9. Mason looked more explosive than CMC today. Hopefully he can get more carries down the stretch.

  10. Look. Kyle is a great head coach in general.

But he’s not this season. Probably SB hangover, but he needs to get his head right and go back to the actually creative and deceptive playcalling we saw in years past (esp the Jimmy days). Deebo is washed, we need a new YAC guy. And yeah, Purdy needs to be allowed to audible. No time as good as now with the season all but lost. Fuck it, let it rip.

And we need a new center.

  11. This feels like the end of the Harbaugh era all over again. Stagnant play calling despite a wealth of talent, and in the midst of expensive roster decisions. Feels bad man

  12. Honestly, while I’m on board with giving Shannahan another year and see what mass readjustments he’d do.

However, if Ben Johnson is interested in us, then we send everything, but the kitchen sink.

  13. This annoys JT to no end, and it’s starting to become a problem to the average viewer now. They are always having Purdy throw to the non HOT side, so if he’s not adjusting his position it leaves him wide open.

I have yet to figure how KS finds this as a benefit. Purdys not going to be fast enough one of these times and he’s going to get clocked. Heck even today he got his arm hit.

  14. In general I feel that defenses have caught up with the offense of Shanahan and the guy in his tree. Just seems like offenses of the guys part of that ecosystem are down compared to last year.

The issue with Shanahan is out of all those guys he’s probably the strongest when it comes to running the ball and worst when it comes to passing where the other guys are more balanced between the two.

I firmly believe Shanahan this offseason has got to swallow some pride, spend some time in the lab doing an autopsy of his offense, and reinvent and refresh it if he wants to continue being cutting edge with it.

  15. I have been stating this for THREE years now. Shanny NEEDS an OC. Maybe he’s a “genius” at play design but he CANNOT call plays to save his life.

  16. Hate to bring it up here, but Grant Cohn has been hammering this point about not giving Brock more authority over the offense.

  17. You cant keep the same shtick over and over again in the NFL. There’s too much film, advanced data analytics and shit these days that you gotta keep adjusting to keep teams on their toes.

It’s a cat and mouse game and right now we’re the mouse that keeps falling into the trap

  18. People still defending Shanny at this point are trolling or coping.

He’s running CMC into the ground right back from an injury while Mason AND Guerendo both rot on the bench. Even if they’re not as good in passing game as CMC, you have to still find ways to get them touches so you don’t keep running CMC. Especially since CMC doesn’t have the same burst as before.

Tehse fucking Deebo sweeps need to stop. They’re NOT WORKING!!!! Our best jet sweep was with Pearsall against the Cowboys, and then Shanny never does jet sweeps with anyone else.

our best offensive plays (aside from praying Jauan Jennings makes a play) were things like our quick dumpoffs or swing passes to CMC or whoever. You know, designed plays to quickly get the ball out of Purdy’s hands and into the playmakers’ hands. But Shanny just simply keeps calling all these long dropback passes. He cannot scheme guys open reliably.

Our 3 worst olinemen in burford, banks, and mckivitz all had holding penalties, sacks allowed, etc. that killed drives. And I guess Jon Feliciano is still not right or something because I thought he was active but didn’t see the field.

And now stuff like this. Remember that Kurt Benkert was a practice squad QB so he actualyl has a little experience, so it’s no longer just random dipshit armchair GMs on reddit or unathletic beat writers calling this out, it’s actual players.

Shanny is stubborn and just thinks his system is perfect and refuses to make adjustments.

  19. Has it occurred to anyone that we infact do not have a legit center. Kyle can dial up the play, but on the field it’s on the Oline to adjust the protection that starts with the center calling out the blitz at the line and adjusting.

Again, almost all of our problems are on the OLINE. Yes you can dig at Lynch and Kyle for not drafting sufficiently when given the opportunity and they are 100% at fault for our shitty Special teams coaching and Oline talent. If you wanna blame Kyle on play design not having a hot route into the open man, that is 100% his fault. But when it comes to the on field play adjustment…..thats on the players, Purdy and his center need to get shit together, if Purdy knows his center can’t do it then unfortunately he needs to adjust his own protection and Kyle should give him that option.

Brendel is the leader of the OLINE and he needs to start acting like it and not like a Guard that snaps the ball. Until that happens this is gonna continue. You can go look at the tape, these NFL level athletes are falling over each other every play because they lack basic fundamentals in handing off to each other, looking lost as hell in the redzone when guys blow by them and the only person doing anything legit is Trent and he cannot control the entire line from his side.

  20. this is why the offense not being able to adjust at the line is a problem. kyle needs to learn he can’t control everything. it’s always been an issue with him

  21. I’ve been saying it. Kyle doesn’t make adjustments. It’s just the same thing all the time no matter what. He changes nothing, you can see the momentum shift in a game and once the other team has it we never get it back. It’s awful to watch
