I am clinging to my and everyone else’s pre-season take of “If Maye hits then it doesn’t matter if every other pick busts because the draft will be a huge success” because the juxtaposition of Ja’Lynn Polk having 0 targets and 1 back-breaking penalty on a day where the team’s LT Lowe catches a TD and Ladd McConkey went off in prime time is too cruel.
Maye has been such a joy to watch this season and he is living up to the Josh Allen comp in big way.
We are lowkey in a tough spot since Mayo has a 2 year leash. Like even if we lost out it’d probably be AVP or the GM getting the axe and not Mayo. Then next year if we won like 6-7 games Kraft probably talks himself into keeping Mayo a 3rd year. Meanwhile Ben Johnson/Vrabel likely have new jobs and Donta Hightower will get promised the job after complimenting Kraft’s shoes on an Israel trip.
Yesterday was probably the best game plan we’ve had as far as scheme this year. All of Henry, Stevenson, Bourne, Pop, Boutte, and Hooper had 4 or more catches, and all of those guys except Hooper (who could be retained cheaply) are under contract beyond this year. They got Marcus involved on a couple snaps, which was good to see. I like the overall core, though they could use a stud to push it to the next level.
Hope we get to see Strange and Wallace soon and whether they can help this OL, which is pretty brutal.
One of the under the radar things with how lackluster our defense has been has been their lack of takeaways. Four interceptions in eleven games and, aside from last week against Chicago, our D-line has had trouble getting home. Zero sacks and zero turnovers basically force our offense to play perfectly.
Two years ago the Broncos hired Nathaniel Hackett to be their HC and 15 games into his rookie HC season, they swallowed their pride, admitted their mistakes, and fired his shitty ass. Now they’re one of the best teams in the AFC.
Kraft needs to do the exact same thing. They cannot go past this season with Wolf, Groh, Mayo, and his coaches. He needs to swallow his pride, admit he fucked up, send them all packing and get people who are qualified to run things.
Otherwise, we’re going to end up in a Garrett/Lewis situation where we’re stuck with shit coaching for years because the owner can’t put his ego aside for the good of the team.
The lack of edge defenders on this team is driving me crazy. Covington isn’t helping himself with the coverage scheme, but the fact that they feel that they have to Cover 0 blitz to get pressure is ridiculous.
Coaching issues aside, I know people think LT or WR is a high priority, and they definitely are, but a legitimate Pass Rusher is probably just as important now. I mean they blitzed Gonzo and I can’t tell if that is an awful decision or desperation.
