[From Gordo’s article:](https://www.cincinnati.com/story/sports/mlb/reds/2024/11/18/source-nick-martinez-to-accept-cincinnati-reds-21m-qualifying-offer-reds-rotation-2025-payroll/76403358007/?taid=673b6b9077dbbf00012256be&utm_campaign=trueanthem&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter)
> The Reds explored a two-year extension with Martinez before those talks fell short at the deadline for making the QO two weeks ago, and the sides are expected to re-engage in multiyear talks, one source said, in a process that **could bring down the 2025 hit on the Reds’ payroll** while providing Martinez the long-term security he might have sought in free agency.
Maybe something like a 3/42M?
The final grade on this one will ultimately be decided by what other moves the team makes. It’s obviously somewhat of an overpay. If this is the Reds adding some extra to the offseason to do that, and keep what they feel is a known quantity, then fine. If it’s a case of them misreading the market, making the QO thinking he would decline and they’d get draft comp, and it causes them to scale back in other areas, then it’s a major miss.
