Giants have spent the 6th most in FA since 2020. The problems they have aren’t due to lack of spending, though I think we as a fan base think it is because we see how our rivals to the south spend. The lack of prospect development in recent years is a bigger issue IMO
Edit: making bad signings and spending on the wrong things is a major part of the issue as well

the issue was never about spending. It’s that they’re unable to convince stars to come here despite offering top dollar
It’s more that they have overpaid for garbage. A top 10 payroll should produce a winning season.
They have also spent half as much as the dodgers since 2020. It’s not that they don’t spend its that they don’t spend smart. They overpay for mid range players because they can’t get a superstar to take their money.
Sorry but all the more reason they need to spend more. To be the best you have to beat the best.
Also it’s ownership and upper management talking $$. Payroll flexibility, breaking even, and reducing payroll. Stop pretending to be a small market team.
I’m curious as to where and when this myth began. It was obvious to anyone paying attention that they were willing to spend whatever it took to win and while there was a dip in spending in the “rebuild” years (2019 to around 2022), they still invested into heavily guys like Gausman and Rodon and were one of the only two offers Bryce Harper received and considered.
Every fan base except New York and Los Angeles thinks their owner doesn’t spend enough. It’s a really tired narrative.
I mean if the Dodgers are paying Ohtani $2M and Roki like the same per year, who really cares. The Dodgers spend more, while also taking advantage of having their own Japanese minor league system.
The worst deal in baseball are 2nd and 3rd tier free agents that make 10-12x what Ohtani and Roki will make next year. At some point you just have to say that the system is rigged against you.
I’m fine if the Giants wait 4-5 years for Ohtani to slow down to start trying to compete.
