  2. So I see a lot of people blaming a lot of the Wings woes on Lalonde’s system. So I genuinely want to pose a question. If the system is the issue, how did the team play well under it for the past 1 or 2 seasons? I know there were some underlying analytics that showed we were playing above expected, so is this just the Wings coming down to earth?

    I’m trying to figure out what is the BIGGEST issue plaguing the Wings right now. Coaching systems? Coaching motivation? Roster construction? Are we really feeling losing players like Perron and Ghost? One who can maintain the puck, and one who can move the puck?

    Wanna know everyone’s thoughts.

  3. If our goalies regress to ‘average or below ‘ (like Talbot did last night) we are much worse off than we can imagine.

  5. Wings are having last year’s December a month early in November. By the power of logic, this means they’re ahead of schedule. Excited to win a playoff round this year, y’all!

  6. I must have fell asleep because I had this awful dream we got walked by a teenager to blow the game last night.

  7. Went to bed after the first up 2-1. Honestly kind of shocked to wake up and see we got thoroughly outshot by the worst shot differential team in the league. As it stands, our best team effort of the year was probably the 4-0 home loss against the Rangers.

  8. This team reminds me a lot of the Tigers under Avila. Constantly churning short term vet contracts with no real direction or sense of progression in the rebuild

  11. The Athletic had an article a couple weeks back that showed the Wings have the 3rd largest improvement in attendance over last years numbers, roughly 1300 tickets. There is also a wait list for season tickets, do we think people are going to start staying home/dropping off the wait list if this team doesn’t improve? This town loves the Wings and despite how this year ends up, this rebuild isn’t totally fucked.

  12. We are honestly a bottom 5 team. Crazy that a “competent GM” could do this in what his 8th year?

  13. The Wings, who supposedly are working on defense this year, have allowed 11 goals to two of the worst teams in the NHL in a week.

    Steve isn’t going to fire Lalonde.

    He just won’t. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised to see some sort of statement from management in support of him.

    This team is awful.

    We are going to continue floating around the bottom 7-8 all season, then when the games won’t matter we will start playing for pride at which point we will completely fuck up our draft position as we have done several times during this rebuild.

    The part that scares me…

    Holl, Gustaffson, Compher, Copp, Veleno, Rasmussen, Veleno, Chiarot, and Tarasenko are all signed thru next season.

    We aren’t making the playoffs next year either.

  17. I became apathetic after the ducks game, that one pissed me off. Up 3-1 only to lose 6-4. I didn’t watch the Kings game because I was annoyed.

    But the Sharks c’mon, they’re basically an AHL team should be an easy win right? Nope…

  18. So, the yzerplan is failing.

    Lalonde needs to go immediately. Interim HC would be much better right now. Yzerman has a lot of questions he needs to answer, and I don’t think he is going to answer them.

    Sell everybody at the deadline. Everybody.

  19. Looking at the roster, it’s not great but it’s honestly not terrible either – if they can make a move to add a competent Second pairing D man they would probably be okay

    I know we lack high end scoring, but honestly we have 3 guys (all of the first line ) who could realistically get 40 goals, and Larkin or Raymond if cooking could probably be in that 85-100 point range

    Feels like Kane is still good for 50-70 points

    Kasper, Tarasenko, bergs could honestly be in the 40-60 range

    2 real 1st pair defensemen

    2 streaky but good to decent goalies

    IMO the 3 things sinking yzerman right now

    1. Horrible coaching hire
    2. Terrible pro scouting (Copp, Compher, Gus)
    3. Maybe this is Lalonde – but mismanaging prospects (2 big ones – why didn’t Ed start the year on the wings last year, and even though he wanted to play in Sweden why couldn’t they get ASP in North America? I’m pretty sure if ASP thought he had a good chance to play on the wings he’d be in Grand Rapids, but in our current model that wouldn’t happen)

    So IMO the only things you can really do at this point

    1. Fire Newsy – this is a given, best way to shake up the locker room
    2. You guys will need to help me out here – imo yzerman kinda sucks outside the first round ( with a couple exceptions) is it realistic to get a competent 2nd pair D man for a second and third rounder? If so that’s the move I make

    If Yzerman doesn’t want to do 1-2, I would probably trade Talbot (while he still has value) now, and put Kane with Larkin/Debrincat to pump up his stats for an eventually deadline trade to a contender

  21. This road trip has been pathetic, it’s basically this years equivalent to losing to Arizona twice. If the wings barely miss the playoffs again this will be the easy four points they passed up.

  26. Newsy’s snoozy system = Low event, low win hockey, low effort, low morale… leads to low attendance and low merch sales.

    How much longer will I have to endure this pain?

  28. I don’t completely agree with people saying the season is a write off yet… I totally agree we are playing like ass and look terrible but there is still SOME time to turn it around. The longer management take to make a change the less and less hope I’ll have but the East is still very close, we’d need some things to go our way and the team to turn it around but it isn’t completely over yet.

  30. My prediction – We won’t hear one word from Stevie this week and Newsy will be behind the bench Thursday. I can’t wait to hear him “give credit to our guys” in his presser today.

  32. I know we are all shitting on Newsy but how awful has Kane looked recently? Can’t make or accept a pass to save his life. Thank god he’s only signed for 1 year.

  33. Some depressing statistics… Larkin and DeBrincat account for more than 40% of our goals this season. After 18 games, only 3 guys have more than 3 goals, and only 5 guys have 10 or more points.

    When you can’t generate offense (because of the system?) and your defense sucks (because of the roster and the PK), there is simply no quick fix. My guess is Yzerman sees it similarly and we are going to need to endure a lot more of the same before Lalonde gets the axe.

  35. The hive mind of fire Lalonde or everything is fine is strong these past couple of weeks. People really need to remember if this team or sports are bothering you this much, it is healthy to take a step back and give your mind and body a break.

  36. Newsy post game: “End of the 2nd period goal was a back breaker”. That was a tying goal and its San Jose ffs. Going into 3rd with tie game against worst team in standings is apparently back breaker
