[Neubeck] “In the meeting, Maxey challenged Embiid to be on time to team activities, calling out the former league MVP about being late “for everything” and how it impacts the locker room, from other players to the coaching staff, sources briefed on the meeting told ESPN.”

  1. >Players told 76ers coach Nick Nurse that they want to be coached harder, and coaches in turn said they want players to practice with purpose and attention to detail.

    >“’Tyrese loves Big Fella, but this is the elephant in the room,’ a person involved in the meeting told ESPN.”

    >Embiid accepted the messages sent in the meeting, sources said, but he stated he is confused about what the 76ers are attempting to execute sometimes on the court.

  2. Good on Tyrese, hopefully this leads to a turnaround. Think Embiid respects him so hopefully he takes it well

  3. They better right this ship quick or it feels like this team is about to go seriously off the rails

  4. I don’t see a problem with this , you should be able to call your teammates out on shit without anybody feeling a way

  5. Oh brother, for years I’ve been defending Embiid but Maxey having to hold him to a basic standard is the final straw

  6. Lol Embiid really has had this fanbase defending him like their own father for a decade. It’s beyond tiring. He’s not the guy. Never has been.

  7. I’m confused by these comments. This is a net positive thing even it leaked (which happens all the time), Embiid has never had accountability from his own locker room because even when he was shit he was the best player. He’s being held accountable by probably the only person in the world outside of his family that he would actually respond to.

After Embiid wakes up, this roster needs a LeBron fire sale if they want to try winning games this season. If not stop wasting our time and commit to a tank.

edit: actually those last two things are not mutually exclusive, half this roster should be playing in China anyway

  8. beyond bummed that tyrese maxey had to call out a 30 year old on these matters. the more and more you hear about joel, the more it just feels like he’s not a fucking winner man. certainly doesn’t seem like he has that mentality at least, and i’m a joel defender.

there’s been so many wake up calls for this dude, he’s been called out by everyone, and has never really responded to the challenges. worst of all, he spent this past summer with the us olympic team, surrounded by actual fucking winners, and clearly hasn’t taken any lessons from that.

i’m just becoming closer and closer to being fully out on joel embiid, and that hurts to say.

  9. It’s funny to be so withdrawn from this team, you can check in anytime during the season and it’s the same stories around the sixers in the embiid era. Fantastic player, just doesn’t have the idk what to call it… juice? Not his fault, picked the game up late and came in to a losing environment. Taking care of his body is on him tho but again, maybe wasn’t given the right guidance considering his play style. I’m totally out of the “title or bust” mindset given the preseason signings but the fact we don’t even have a good on court product because, shockingly, we’re hobbled with injuries is just sad. Go birds

  10. Unacceptable by joel. Just a fucking joke. Cant make a god damn ECF and has the nerve to be late to anything?

  11. Maybe the Sixers start to play better. Maybe they make the playoffs. Maybe they’re “lucky” enough to make it to the second round this year.

But it is starting to feel like the beginning of the end of the Embiid-Era Sixers. It’s just a lot of shit that’s starting to stack on top of each other.

  12. Huge fucking balls on Maxey man. Calling out a former MVP is no joke, but he has earned that right by being the hardest working MF out there.

  13. Can this team be fucking normal? Just once? We are the most dysfunctional team in the league. Every season its some fucking thing. Embiid, Harden, Simmons, Fultz, Colangelo, Bynum. FFS, just fucking be normal.

  14. The organization failed in my mind. Look at AI’s situation when he wouldn’t show up for shit. Coaches/ higher up’s would be on his ass all the time. The one thing was AI gave it 100% in games and let it all at on the floor every single night. I really can’t say that with Embiid.

  15. As much as I’ve rooted for Embiid in his career, it’s become obvious that he doesn’t have the “It” factor that it takes to be an NBA champion. Between constantly not being in game shape and pouting when things get tough, he has not shown the leadership skills needed to be at an elite level when it matters most.

  16. Hate to speculate on people’s mental health but with all the nonsense that’s gone on over the years it wouldn’t surprise me if Joel Is just deeply depressed at this point and the Troel personality is just the deflection he puts on. All the injuries all the fan hot take shit in the media all the organizational disfunction id never want to be in public again if it were me no matter how much money you’re making. If you can’t go outside without someone either telling you you’re garbage or you’re the savior of the city with no middle ground how do you actually function

  17. Why does the 24 year old have to be the one to call out the 30 year old mvp? Is this not the coach’s job to nip it in the bud before it gets to this point? What is nick nurse even doing?

  18. This should be seen as an absolute positive.

With that being said, there is an uncomfortable aspect of this that I hope doesn’t get worse.

I think that the combination of the following might have Embiid struggling…

    – I think his knee isn’t where he wants it to be, and unfortunately that might not be something fixable as of right now. Meniscus tears can range from “nothing to truly worry about” to “this could be the start of the end” for athletes. You combine this with previous meniscus tears, and his sheer size, you have something that could be truly worrying for his game going forward.

    – Getting shit on by virtually everyone for playing in the Olympics. Despite the vast majority of fans idea that players can “tune it out and go about your life” most human beings can’t do that. It’s unrealistic to think he can just tank all of the negative press and it not effect him on any emotional level. Humans truly tend to focus on our flaws, unfortunately.

    – The Hayes article. The overall response to it by news/social outlets, and the front offices handling of the matter.

    – An almost entirely re-tooled team who is struggling to gel together.

    – Being sick/under the weather, etc.

Embiid might just be fucking tired of it. I’d understand why, but hopefully someone he thinks so highly of calling him out on his shit, something that almost all of us need sometimes, can get this train back on its track.

On paper, we’re better than where we are. MUCH BETTER. We still need to make some sort of moves, and while I don’t know what those moves are at the moment, the team needs to be able to grow with each other.

With this long winded comment, don’t think I can’t see that there is now a realism to the doomers writing on the wall. I can understand how this fanbase could be turning on it, but I’m still not willing to give up on it.

  19. Something always stuck with me. There was a segment during our games last year where they asked our players who they would want to be and why?

PJ Tucker responded at the end he would like to* be Joel as Joel doesn’t have to speak to anybody or smile. It was a short part of an even shorter segment but I found it to be pretty telling on Joel as a teammate and more so as a leader.

  20. Also it’s so clear Embiid doesn’t give a shit about off season conditioning. Every year he takes 2 weeks to play into shape. Don’t give me the knee excuse he can still get on a bike or swimming, something.
