‘Oilers don’t have team good enough to contend for Stanley Cup’: Button on Oilers right now

Are you rethinking your Oilers Stanley Cup pick? Where would you begin to make changes on this Oilers’ roster? TSN Director of Scouting Craig Button joins SC with Jay Onrait to share his thoughts.

  1. The team is old. Love Nuge and Hyman, but they are now definitely past their peak and the depth is also old and slowing down. Could be overcome if goaltending was great, but that is an issue as well. Oilers will need to take a step back, reload their depth with speed and youth.

  2. At the beginning of the season, saying the Oilers are Stanley Cup contenders was almost as silly as saying the Winnipeg Jets would NOT make the playoffs.
Both TSN and Sportsnet – due entirely to their business connections to both the Oilers and the Leafs – have to artificially maintain a "narrative" about both teams, regardless of reality. It's so funny watching that reality come crashing down on them, when all other avenues of "excuse generation" have run out. The "narrative" has been impossible to maintain, and only now is TSN starting to hedge. Sportsnet will NEVER let go of their narrative of the Oilers being contenders…pretty sure they'd rather burn down their own studio before publically saying anything close to that.
Whoever listens to the ramblings of the TSN and Sportsnet "experts" deserves to be misinformed.

  3. They didn’t have enough talent last year. They just got lucky last year with a very easy path to the cup. The Vancouver series showed they weren’t that great. This team wouldn’t make the playoffs if they played out east. This team isn’t very good

  4. First mistake the Oil made was hire Bowman as GM !! Then the D has been suspect for years.. And yes they need help up front as well but the D and Skinner needs to pick up his game…

  5. I'm an Oilers fan but I've been saying this exact thing since before the season started. Never bought into the hype–their defense and goaltending is simply not good enough, and they're too slow up front outside of McDavid. Our chance to win a cup was last June and we blew it.

  6. Marcus Pettersson at 50% retained and Drew O'Connor to the Oilers for Jeff Skinner and Sam O'Reilly.
Other Pens cheap UFA wingers: Anthony Beauvillier and Jesse Puljujarvi. JP: $800,000 and DOC: $925,000
    Pens fan.

  7. This team is still going through a playoff hangover but need to figure this out soon with the new additions. 23% into the campaign with one game over 500, hit the panic button if it doesn't turn around by Christmas.
