Firing Jim Montgomery Won’t Fix The Bruins Issues

On Tuesday’s edition of Zolak and Bertrand, the guys reacted to the Bruins 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Columbus Blue Jackets. While discussing the changes that need to be made to the organization, Bertrand made the case that although the franchise will start by firing the coach, the issues with the team are a lot larger than that.

  1. The roster is old and doesn't have it anymore. I like Swayman, but its obvious him holding out has affected his performance. It needs a rebuild and some hard decisions, probably Marchand or McAvoy.

  2. It can't hurt. It's going to be hard to make a mid-season "hockey trade" as Felger likes to say. The reality is you have too many overpaid players. Guys who have had one good year are being paid for the next 4. I know that's the nature of contracts…but you can't do that for everyone and not expect it to catch up to you. Swayman, Coyle, Lindholm (both), Zadorov…even Pastrnak and McAvoy. They jumped the gun throwing money at too many career mediocre guys, and guys who still had to "prove it". Idk if I see a way out of this without ripping the whole thing down to its roots…and that does start with the coach.

  3. It’s time to breakup the Neely/Sweeney friendship
a new coach won’t change how this team is built, mediocre hockey will continue until Sweeney goes. Overpaid and aging players
good to hear you guys speak the truth

  4. So suddenly Monty is a bad coach ? Watching this team play is painful. Their power play is predictable. Short handed they are awful. Last year they were very good. What does that tell you ? Look at the players who aren’t here now ? DeBrusk,Heinen, Shattenkirk, Ullmark. This debacle is on the current team. Management won’t do anything beyond firing Monty. They ought to fire a few players.

  5. Firing the coach won't help…but also firing the coach will help but then again firing the coach won't help.
Boys. Pick a standpoint and explain it and stand behind it. I can bullshit with my buddies at a bar like this all night…and get beer served to me while we do it. Come on.

  6. Coaches are hired to be fired. Something was going on behind the bench. Montgomery is a good coach but he can't fix what is going on in the locker room.

  7. They pay 8.25 million for a goalie with a .825 save percentage. Could have kept Ullmark and got a top 6 foward. That kids greedy shit attitude spread through the roster like a wild fire.

  8. Of COURSE it won't. Monty isn't the guy puck-watching while an open attacker is all alone in the slot. He's not the guy passing the puck to nobody except the other team. He's not the one making mental errors that you wouldn't expect to see from a decent college player. But when a team of professional athletes (at least on paper) is playing so consistently terribly, something has to change. Speaking as a fan since the Bobby Orr days, the changes need to take place in the front office as well. Sweeney has put together a roster that is simply not good enough to compete at the NHL level. Of course, you don't replace a Bergeron or Kreicji, but still, more talent on the ice, and better decisions off the ice, are needed.
