I think Hal understands that losing a bidding war to the Mets over their superstar player would be a really bad look on the franchise

Hal did make it very clear when we were chasing judge that he does recognize when he wants to the value of certain players
Re-sign Soto, add Walker and strengthen the pen. Go nuclear Hal just like your father before you.

The assurance that Hal isn’t gonna just call it an off-season if they re-sign Soto after a bidding war with Cohen is the big news here. I fully expected (and still kind of expect) Hal to close his wallet once he drops whatever it takes to keep Soto.
