Surprising move, Mets leave Mike Vasil, Dom Hamel and Nate Lavender off the 40 man roster and they will all be eligible for the Rule 5 draft next month.

Vasil and Hamel had down years in AAA and Lavender had TJS this year but it is very surprising that the Mets wouldn’t protect arms that are knocking on the door of the Majors. Vasil is a potential spot starter at least and Hamel is a spin rate fiend who could be a weapon out of the pen if he gets his walks under control.

Surprising that they wouldn’t protect their internal arms while bringing in Justin Hagenman, Kevin Herget, and Dylan Covey.

I would not be surprised to see any of them get plucked in Rule 5 and depending on the team, have a chance to make it through the year and Mets lose em for good.

  1. I don’t think Vasil or Hamel have the juice to stay up the entire year based on their AAA stats, so I’m fine with it.

  2. Vasil and Hamel have been talked about a good amount, but looking at their stats they are behind the curve. Struggling in AAA at age 24 and 25. Rough year for both of them. Hard to justify giving them 40-man spots with how this team is run.

  3. Does this likely mean Stearns has his eye on the rule 5 draft for some significant additions?
