[Sports Info Solutions] Chris Sale Would Have Been Even Better If Not For His Outfield Defense

  1. Hi, hope you don’t mind my sharing my dive into Chris Sale and the outfield defense the Braves played behind him in 2024. Thought it would be good food for the “didn’t think of that” crowd.

One thing I didn’t do was look at actual damage done by the outfield’s missing balls vs their making catches … but the theoretical model says they cost him 9 runs. Impressive that he was as good as he was.

Questions welcomed if anyone wants to know more about our stats

  2. You can place the blame almost entirely on Soler lol, he was a disaster in the field this year.

  3. After the ASB, I remember Adam Duvall misplaying fly balls that led to first inning triples in three or four straight games

  4. FWIW it wasn’t just Soler. Kelenic accumulated -4 OAA and Laureano accumulated -6 OAA (although I’m not able to disaggregate his pre-Atlanta and Atlanta numbers).

  5. The number of looping fly balls that bounced just in front of a jogging Soler on the right field line was frankly ridiculous.

Yet another giant advert for FIP-based metrics.
