Orioles News & Notes: Colton Cowser, Brandon Young, Corbin Burnes, Kade Strowd

Colton Cowser should have won the AL Rookie of the Year Award. But Luis Gil of the New York Yankees won instead. Host Connor Newcomb tries to figure out how the voters made that happen.

Then, Connor chats about the Baltimore Orioles decision to protect Brandon Young and Kade Strowd on the 40-man roster, and discusses what comes next after Corbin Burnes and Anthony Santander both declined the Qualifying Offer.

  1. Yes he was!! The headline this year was “pitchers win ROY for only the third time in history.” Skenes was truly phenomenal, but how does a pitcher stack up against an everyday player?? I’d still give him a maybe…but then Gil was just thrown in to make the story…even though he was great and has a cool comeback story. But a 3.50 ERA, a 1.19 WHIP, and playing only 20% of the games Cowser did definitely feels like a snub.

  2. I disagree I don’t think cowser was robbed it was a very close race but Gil was a great pitcher and cowser had a bad slump that put him behind I would say. A lot of betting odds has Gil as the favorite both deserved it and either way they both played very well for rookies

  3. You have to take into account things that "Baseball" people do. Cowser did hit 24 home runs and had a 4.0 WAR. But these statistics are also true: Cowser struck out 172 times – IN LESS THAN 500 official at-bats (that is 34.5% of the time); he hit only .211 with runners in scoring position (RISP), and .151 overall in "high-leverage" situations. Whenever a pitcher had to get him out, they knew they could – throw him off-speed pitches. Cowser hit .185 vs. change-ups and only .133 against splitters. I like him, but he was not as valuable to the Orioles as Gil was to the Yankees. It was far from "being robbed". That is a fan-based comment.

  4. He was definitely not robbed he got off to a hot start and then just wasn't good. Gil helped the yankees throughout the season even after his era plummeted after a couple bad starts.

  5. Yankees fans ….I mean sports writers that vote on this know that the Yankees are in trouble for years to come. So, an extra pick in the first round is huge for them and narrows the gap.
