Why Martinez’s dollars make sense
Mark Sheldon

CINCINNATI — When the Reds made a qualifying offer earlier this month to free agent pitcher Nick Martinez, many expressed surprise that they would risk spending $21.05 million if he accepted.

That wasn’t how president of baseball operations Nick Krall and his staff saw it after Martinez accepted the offer on Monday.

“I wouldn’t say there was a risk,” Krall said on Tuesday. “We were either going to get a guy for a one-year deal at $21 million that we felt like was market for this guy or we were going to get a Draft pick out of it when somebody else signed him. We felt it was a pretty good win-win whichever way we ended.”

Martinez accepts qualifying offer, stays with Reds
There were multiple reasons the Reds were comfortable with making the qualifying offer.

Had Martinez signed elsewhere, Cincinnati would have received a compensation Draft pick. But for $21.05 million, the Reds landed Martinez after he had a 4.0 bWAR and 3.10 ERA for them last season during the 34-year-old’s career year. Good luck finding a pitcher capable of being worth that many wins without paying as much in money or as the return in a trade.

“We’re really excited to have him back,” Krall said. “You get a one-year deal on a guy that’s got a chance to be a solid part of your rotation. He’s got versatility. He pitched, obviously, in a variety of roles last year — starter, reliever … after an opener. He wasn’t worried about that. He just came and took the ball whenever we wanted [him] to and produced quality innings.”

To compare, Cincinnati gave Frankie Montas a one-year, $16 million contract when he was coming off a 2023 in which he was limited by an arm injury to 1 1/3 innings for the whole season. He posted a 0.6 bWAR with a 5.01 ERA in 19 starts for the Reds before he was traded to the Brewers on July 30.

Reds, Royals Reportedly Discussing Jonathan India Trade
By Nick Deeds | November 16, 2024 at 10:58pm CDT

The Reds and Royals are discussing a trade that would send second baseman Jonathan India to Kansas City in exchange for right-hander Brady Singer, according to a report from C. Trent Rosencrans and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. Rosenthal adds that a deal between the sides is not considered close and that India is one of “several” hitters the Royals are looking at as they consider dealing from their rotation depth.

India, 28 next month, is coming off something of a rebound campaign in 2024. After averaging just 111 games per season in each of the past two years with below average offensive numbers while dealing with hamstring issues and a bout of plantar fasciitis in his left foot, he posted his best season since winning the 2021 NL Rookie of the Year award this past year. In 637 trips to the plate across 151 games this year, India slashed a respectable .248/.357/.392 (108 wRC+) while slugging 15 homers and stealing 13 bases. He also struck out just 19.6% of the time while walking at a 12.6% clip, making him one of just three players (alongside Freddie Freeman and Juan Soto) to strike out in less than 20% of his plate appearances with a walk rate of at least 12%.

  1. Martinez can be used as a setup man. If this rotation can pitch deep into games,Nick Martinez can come in during the 7th or 8th inning and slam the door closed! Good move!

  2. Last year people questioned fangraphs win total for the Reds coming into 2024…..they were closer to being right than the more optimistic projections. I wouldn't just scoff at it. Do I think they'll be better? Yeah, the manager upgrade alone makes them better. Just saying it's not out of the realm of possibility that fangraphs is once again closer to being right than wrong.

  3. Strand and McLain had good hard hit rates in AFL. McLain had a freak injury and an oblique then reinjured the oblique rushing back for a playoff race. He is not injury prone because of that. I expect Candy to have a bounce back year as well. If they can make the Indy trade, do it. Then trade Abbot for Taylor Ward.

  4. Seattle wants to cut payroll. Offer candy and arroyo and maybe Collier/Stewart for Luis castillo. Castillo is exactly what this staff needs and that rids them of candy contract and saves Seattle a ton of money.

  5. Martinez brings a veteran presence to the rotation much more cheaply than trading for Gray. Add another starter? Yes! They need to trade for Crochet. They should take on Benintendi's contract to lower the price and send Stewart, Collier, and Arroyo to the White Sox. Yes, they should trade India for Singer, but the Royals are talking to other teams too, specifically to the Angels about Ward. If the Singer deal falls through, the Reds should trade India to the M's for Raley (from OH) to play right/first/DH. Candy and Marte share third. Steer plays second.
