The fouling, and shot selection needs to improve, but Isaiah played solid getting assists
Glad we improved the tank
Ref ball in the second half just sucked the fun out of this one.
That was a beautiful tank job
I don’t know why Sexton is on this team as he definitely wants to be on a playoff team and the Jazz have no real interest in him long term.
1) I really wish we would have found a way to draft Castle this year. Dude is gonna have a long career as a starter in the league.
2) I can not wait for Chris Paul to retire
Spurs had 46 free throws. I just want to watch basketball, not foulball.
It’s kinda amazing the sixers can be accidentally worse than this defense
Why was Brice banished before now? He’s better than George, Collier & Williams. Give him more minutes.
I know it stings but San Antonio is now .500 and far away from dead last with motivation to stay competitive. We can’t let them get a top pick.
Said it in the game thread but no matter how you feel about Will Hardy’s sets he;
1, has an injured team with minimal options
2, focused on development by playing Brice and Collier late.
It was going to be a loss pretty much no matter what, the bright spot is our draft odds are looking great now.
Raptors beat the Wolves tonight too, so really good night for the tank fwiw
GAME NOTES:
Lauri finally remembered that he is the #1 option and put up the most shots on the team through 3 quarters until Keyonte George decided he was the #1 option. He finished the game with just 4 of his 8 made field goals as being assisted. He finished with 27 points, 8-17 shooting, 3-10 from 3, 8-8 from the line, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block. He was 5-7 from inside the arc, all being inside the paint. He wasn’t as involved in the second half, which coincidentally was our worse of the two halves. In fact, he only had 2 FGA in the 4th, one was a late 3PA with 10 sec left, one was a gimme dunk down low. We NEED to get him involved down the stretch. What in the world man.
Keyonte George. I felt like down the stretch he was trying to go for the big play, rather than the right play. 6-18 shooting, 3-12 from deep, 4-4 from the line, 2 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers, 3 fouls in 33 minutes tonight. Surprise surprise, he was 1-1 from the corner from 3, and 2-11 from the wing and above the break. I need to see him hunt for better shots, surely somebody on the analytics team has pointed this out, right? It’s painful to watch. With each game my concern grows. I also feel like he was taking shots away from Lauri late. IDK, he’s the most polarizing player on the Jazz.
John Collins had a great night. 18 points, 8-14 shooting, 1-5 from deep, 14 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 1 turnover, and 4 fouls. I like what he’s been bringing this year. He also hit that sick layup that u/UtahVictoryKings posted to the subreddit. John Collins has been our most consistent player this season so far.
Collin Sexton had another quiet night. 18 points, 6-13 shooting, 0-3 from deep, 6-7 from the line, 1 rebound, 1 assist, 1 steal, 4 turnovers. Fairly efficient, his turnovers weren’t great, but he deserved to get the ball more. 24 minutes isn’t enough for a player like Collin Sexton. I wonder if he’s going to be our trade deadline departure this season. I’d hate to see him go, he has been a top 5 player for me since he entered the league.
Kyle Filipowski struggled shooting tonight, and also left the game due to an ankle sprain in the third quarter. Hopefully he doesn’t miss any games, as we are already stretched thin at the 4/5 slot with Kessler injured. Flip did finish with 1-6 shooting for 4 points, but most impressively he had 9 rebounds (3 offensive) in his 18 minutes of play. All but one of his misses came at the rim, which was concerning, but I’m not putting any weight into an off-night. Hopefully he’s back soon.
Cody Williams continues to struggle. 0 points, 0-2 shooting, 0-1 from deep, 2 rebounds, 1 block, 1 turnover, 3 fouls in 14 minutes. I’m begging Will Hardy to let him spend time in the G-League. He is not NBA ready, and wasn’t drafted as NBA ready.
Johnny Juzang made his minutes count, but I’d love to see more aggression overall form him. 2-4 shooting, all from deep, 6 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 16 minutes. I’m not expecting much from his minutes, and I’m glad he got some minutes, but I just want him to be a bit more aggressive.
Eubanks had more minutes due to Flip’s iinjury, and was mediocre. 2-3 shooting, 6 rebounds was a plus, and 2 blocks, but he also had 4 fouls in 21 minutes. Nothing really of note.
Collier also had an off night offensively. 4 points, 1-8 shooting, 0-2 from deep, 2-4 from the line. He did have 3 rebounds, and 6 assists, but that’s contrasted with 5 turnovers and 5 fouls. He had back-to-back plays with a foul late in the game, one defensive, then one offensive. I still think he has the highest upside out of all of our rookies, but he needs to develop a good jumpshot. He also missed multiple shots at the rim, which isn’t ideal.
Brice Sensabaugh was cooking in the first half. 18 points, 7-13 shooting, 4-7 from deep, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block tonight. He was a victim of poor defense as a team, which led to a team low -19, but I loved his minutes. He stepped up when Jordan Clarkson was out and made the most of his minutes. Big Sensabaugh fan.
We ultimately lost that game in the second half. Poor defense, lots of unnecessary fouls (SA shot 32 FTA in the second half. 32!), and bad turnovers killed our momentum set in that beautiful first half. 16 point lead evaporated.
Another good tank night, especially with Minnesota losing to Toronto. But goddamn man let’s please let Lauri Markkanen get the ball in the second half if he’s having a great first half. Infuriating stuff down the stretch, especially by Keyonte.
3-12.
Funny that tonight gets to be a “development” game, but any other game that Clarkson actually plays is a “we’re showcasing the vets” game
I know some people see Sextons box score and think he’s doing well, but I’ve been very disappointed by him this season.
He’s been playing completely out of control again, where he’ll look off open teammates just to do a straight line drive into 3 people at the rim.
He just doesn’t play within the system, I feel like he’s constantly blowing up plays to look for scoring opportunities for himself and even if it goes in, he’s not putting up good shots.
That’s most likely why he was benched to me. When him and keyonte were in during the 4th. The offense consisted of him and keyonte dribbling the ball on the perimeter and taking contested shots, even if some of them go in. Keyontes only in his second year so he gets a little less slack for it but Sexton is a veteran and still doing this.
I think our best chance at a real point guard developing at this point is collier, which is why im guessing he was in at the end of the game.
Calls were made. That’s all it is.
Extremely winnable game which we gave away due to fouling and poor play in clutch time. Here’s my thoughts on the guys.
John – Good solid game again. Monster on the boards with 14 and scored 18 too. +5 on the court, been our best player this season.
Lauri – 27 points and did well. Would’ve liked to have seen him get a few more shots in clutch time, but the ball needs to reach him for that to happen because he isn’t going to bring it up the court. Has to take responsibility as the main man for being -19 on the court but hard to find fault in his performance to be honest.
Kyle – Struggled to score and finished with an injury, hope it’s just a short term one particularly with Walker out. Was doing well on the boards with 9 but also had some fouls which were not needed. Learning quickly overall though, which is great to see – very happy with his development.
Keyonte – First 3 quarters he was excellent. Good to see Patty talking to him after he came out in the third on the bench. Fourth quarter different story, just not showing maturity in clutch time across a number of plays. Big learning curve for him if he’s going to be the one we rely on in clutch time. Finished the game very inefficient despite his 19 points.
Collin – Was solid in his minutes and had 18 points, but was surprisingly benched in the fourth quarter. Looking back, not sure what the exact reason was although he was -11 and had 4 turnovers. Perhaps Will wanted to give Isaiah the experience of closing it out. What I didn’t like was his clear negative body language once he did come out, which could be taken as undermining the coach and staff. Waving his arms about and standing up at the end of the bench. Young guys like Cody sitting right there listening to whatever he was saying, which didn’t look positive. Disappointing as he is meant to be an experienced professional, you might disagree with a coaching decision, but leave that conversation for behind closed doors. If he was encouraging his teammates then I take my comments back but it didn’t seem that way to me.
Isaiah – Not learning quickly. 5 turnovers today, a consistent problem for him. 5 fouls, some really dumb as well. Can’t score consistently and even struggles from the line. His energy is great but he really showed his rawness today – good experience to get closing minutes but he didn’t play well with him. +3 on the court so wasn’t part of a terrible unit but was part of the unit which gave up the lead. Brainless plays at the rim which Bassey was having a field day swatting away.
Johnny – Surprised with his lack of minutes. Seemed like he got benched after a dumb foul, but a lot of other guys were making them. Made a couple of shots in the first half and was part of a really good run, being +14 on the court in 16 minutes. I suspect with the play of the others, he will get a chance to close in the next close game should he be part of the rotation.
Drew – Same thing as always, solid. -8 on the court but he did his job, although Bassey did outplay him as their backup big.
Cody – 14 minutes and didn’t really do much other than a block on a three. Some daft fouls and like Isaiah, he can’t score consistently. -8 on the court, a below average performance.
Brice – There’s been a lot of talk about him which I have seen on here but I don’t see him as a NBA rotation player. If he was a rookie I’d have a bit more leeway in my view of him but he isn’t. Yes he made some shots today which was great but even in the first half his defense was terrible. He looks too slow in general on that end of the floor. -19 on the court shows you how bad his impact was in the second half, particularly as he was well in the + category at halftime. I suspect Will played him more to give him an opportunity as he was scoring it well in limited minutes, but he won’t be happy with his play once he watches it back.
Coach Hardy – Interesting choice not to close with Sexton, I’m sure we’ll hear his explanation about why. Will be really frustrated with the dumb fouls and lack of strong play in clutch time. I’m sure he and the staff will explain where they went wrong and how they can learn from this. If Flip is out, will be very interesting to see what he does with the rotation. Really good game plan, which is why we went into the halftime break up by however many. Giving a lot of young guys minutes so will have to live with the ups and downs.
Knicks next, hopefully we can compete well in front of our home crowd!
Will hardy is not a world class coach. He is at the g league level like much of our team. To pretend otherwise is straight denial. We are a bad team from top to bottom. The tank is real. That being said. One player or a number 1 draft pick isn’t going to have the change some of you all think. We need like 5 number 1 draft picks to get out of this shit. Realistically we will be lucky to be making the playoffs in 5 years.
The worse coaching I’ve ever seen just to lose a game. Indefensible benching a guy who scorer 6 straight to keep in the players you did!
Our defense just sucks without Kessler helping to block shots.
Insane how lauri only shot twice in the 4th quarter. Its a disgrace that our best player is consistently ignored by guys way worse than him who just iso and chuck shots into the void. Doesn’t help that lauri’s timid personality probably just encourages them to do what they want
No Wemby and we are still able to pull out the loss. This was a game we would definitely win the previous 2 years and in the end it would just hurt us. It seems as if we’re doing the tank right so far for once.
It’s strange how so many in this sub can be tank fans but also be in denial about how bad we are. Do you all think we’re losing and throwing games on purpose?
