Kyle Dubas gives his mini State of the Penguins address

Kyle Dubas spoke about the current state of the Penguins, where they stand on a retooling, and what they have to do to improve this season. Hunter and Patrick discuss Dubas’s comments about how the Penguins have to be better at defending leads and closing out games as well as his plan to both build this team for the present and the future. Then, they look at the lines from practice and how there’s now suddenly a logjam at forward with some players possibly looking at time in the press box or back down in the AHL. It also appears that even with the impending return of Kris Letang, Owen Pickering will stay in the lineup. Finally, a player poll from The Athletic brought about some unique ideas for rule changes and Hunter and Patrick give their take on what they’d like to see changed, especially when it comes to overtime.

  1. for me ownership and gm and not doing good job being honesty what there doing like when they told us and even sid were gonna be good but your playing like lottery team they just klook stupid for saying that like you just like backstab and lie to sid to make him sign the contract so you get your tickets sales like i feel bad for sid that got betrayed from that

  2. I like some of these rules that could boost offense. But I think doing it like baseball where the rules are only regular season would be the best. I love the authentic and traditional style of the game in the playoffs and I wouldn’t want that touched

  3. Drew O'Connor should get scratched for a game. He should be the one coming out for Hayes on Friday (if he comes back then). We haven't seen much of Ponomarev because he's had such little time on ice. These young guys could really inject some life into this lineup, but we aren't seeing the same level of trust between Sully and the young guys like we once did when Sully first got hired so many years ago. I'm not sure if that's due to these guys not being Sullys guys, but it needs to change. The young players need to be able to feel trusted by the head coach without fear of being benched or scratched.

  4. The biggest thing that the Pens could do, right now, to improve results is to change the system, and that will, most likely, require a coaching change. The players have shown, for the last few seasons, that they cannot play Sully's system like they used to play it. Far too many times when the defensemen "activate" and no forward drops back to cover the blue line.
Far too many times when you have both defensemen and one or two forwards getting trapped behind their own goal line, leaving opponents free reign in front of the net.

  5. I like the rule that the PWHL had for the penalty kill jailbreak. If you're on the power play and give up a shorthanded goal, your power play ends.

  6. They could create a category of penalties between a two minute minor and a five minute major, like a two minute major, which, like you'd suggested, does not expire with a power play goal, and lasts the full two minutes. You could also add a five minute minor category, granting a man advantage for five minutes, or until a goal is scored, whichever happens first.
