From MSN:

The Washington Nationals have made a surprising roster decision. The Nats have decided not to tender a contract to relief pitcher Kyle Finnegan……Finnegan has been with the Nats since 2020 and has been a consistent contributor in the bullpen. Last year, he had a 3.76 ERA and 28 saves. In 2024, Finnegan posted a 3.68 ERA and 38 saves. He was even added to the NL All-Star team.

The decision by the Nationals seems to be motivated more by finances than performance…..Finnegan made $5.1 million last season, which was his second year of arbitration. He was likely to earn more in 2025, which is his final season of being under team control before hitting free agency in 2026.

If this surprising decision by Washington is finance motivated and not a result of some injury concerns, they Hoyer by all means should look into signing this guy. If healthy, he certainly would strengthen the bullpen.

  1. Decent reliever, a bit expensive for a non elite reliever at nearly 6 million with projections for that number to go up to 8-10 million next season.

  2. I feel like we’d be paying him for his ceiling, which isn’t necessarily a terrible gamble, especially given our needs

  3. He’s just ok. League average K and BB rates, ERA has outperformed his FIP. He’s 33 and I assume he’s out of options. You can’t carry many guys like that if you can’t shuffle them back and forth. And you definitely don’t want to pay them more than $5 million.

  4. He wouldn’t be bad by any means. He has a high FIP but we fortunately have great defenders (not sure what happened last year). Another lefty would be nice though.

  5. He is extremely consistent in season-long statistics. His ERA hovers around 4, he gets a K/IP, he walks a few too many guys. He’d be a reasonable set up man who could pitch in 40% of the games and close once every couple of weeks when Hodge is tired. He would probably take a 2 year deal, but for the Cubs he’d probably expect to be anointed the closer.

  6. Just be a top 3 payroll team to match your revenue and market size FOR THE LOVE OF FUCKING GOD
