[Rodriguez] “In an effort to position themselves with a chance to compete for Roki Sasaki, MLB teams are strongly considering breaking pre-agreements with international players from the 2025 period to retain the largest possible budget and be able to compete for Sasaki, at least in economic terms.”

  1. A’s manager Mark Kotsay admitted they’ve talked to Roki Sasaki about signing with the Athletics

  2. Isn’t the smart play to wait until Sasaki gives his word and then break pre-agreements as necessary?

  3. Wow, Dodgers playing 4D chess. They’re only feigning a push for Sasaki, so Dodgers can sign all the international players other teams will drop

  4. I know Sasaki is a great opportunity, but seems like bad business to back out of hand shake deals to try and get Sasaki and then say nah jk we can’t get him, let’s do our hand shake deal that we had.

  5. MLB NEEDS a better system for this. Maybe a lottery of sorts where the more teams that enter the lottery, the larger the pool. Whoever wins that lottery gets the player, and the player gets that bonus money.

  6. Kind of dumb. If the dude gave up dozens of millions just for not waiting out the “legal” period i dount 500k is gonna make a difference.

  7. I wonder if this inversely benefits teams who have no shot at Sasaki and then pick up other international players the otherwise might not have been first choice for

  8. Sasaki probably doesn’t care, but if I knew an org was willing to break a deal and be shady just to get me, I might reconsider signing with that org.

  9. Honest question, if Latin players have these handshake deals, why is a handshake deal with Sasaki creating this uproar where people are screaming unfair? Double standard?

  10. Incredibly short sighted if this is true. I don’t money is an issue with Sasaki. He’s already foregoing a huge contract by requesting to be posted early. It will be funny to see some teams break agreements only for Sasaki to not sign with them while smarter teams scoop up those international players.

I don’t think international players will hold ill will towards Sasaki. If anything they’ll be pissed at the organization that broke their agreements. However, I don’t think that makes a difference once these players get to the big leagues and start looking at massive contracts. “You may have broken our agreement when I was a teenager but you’re offering $450 million so it’s all good,”

  11. Teams already break these handshake deals with IFA players already.

They promise 14 year old kids and their families X amount of money and then three years later, when the kid doesn’t physically develop the way they expected, they offer them less money.

It’s just more publicized at the moment because of Sasaki.

  12. Teams about to ruin their relationships with other international training facilities at the chance to sign Sasaki. I can’t believe teams would be this stupid or desperate.

  13. And that would be ridiculous. Roki Sasaki will make PLENTY of money in endorsements and other avenues. Why would you sever ties with legit prospects to squeeze a bit more cash in? Seems like poor management imo

  14. No way I’d consider a team that did that to other players. Also way to absolutely fuck yourself in the future with latin players.

  15. It can’t really be about the money, though, right? Like, a couple of million isn’t going to sway his decision, I wouldn’t think. It certainly wasn’t about the money for Ohtani.

  16. This seems like a opportunity for 29 other teams to swoop high ceiling international players at a discount

  17. Why? What’s the point? We know he’s going to the Dodgers, it’s a foregone conclusion.

There is no possibility of him going to any other team.
