Ant is an energy vampire. Starting point guard and a veteran, guy should be the leader of the team.
Gimme Scooot
I’m gonna play the devil’s advocate for Simons here for a bit, because as much as he’s been terrible this season, there are I believe many elements that lead to this situation.
First of all I think it’s legit that Simons feels kinda “betrayed” by the organization, he has shown impressive development since the 2021/2022 season where he was basically the only bright spot, he even expanded his pallette as a pick and roll player (nothing elite, just upgraded from mediocre to decent) and it’s absolutely legit that he’d be the guy to take the torch once Dame left. He played well last year all things considered, he took some of the toughest shots in the league with a totally static offense and arguably the worst screen-setting center in the NBA, he put up respectable numbers and was still a flamethrower, which I believe is his most important quality in today’s NBA. There is absolutely something going on with him because he looks nothing like that player anymore, and obviously if your offense is gone and you’re a bottom of the NBA level defender you’re actually unplayable, and to me this is clearly mental, it’s insane to me that you lose all your offensive qualities in the blink of an eye. That being said, it’s totally unprofessional if he’s acting up cus he’s upset, I’d get it if you feel betrayed but it’s a bad look for you and towards the fans.
I don’t want to talk too much about the non existent offensive scheme that contributes a lot to Simons’ (and Banton’s, Scoot’s…) chucking habits, there’s literally no movement you’re left with nothing but to heave it, it hurts my eyes every time but it’s like beating a dead horse talking about Chauncey’s incompetent coaching.
I think the FO bears the biggest responsibility here, to me as an outsider it looks like they didn’t have a plan for him, he was the odd man out along with Dame once they drafted Scoot, except Ant was better than Sharpe and Henderson, if you were gonna play him, the idea has to be to trade him ASAP, I mean if you traded Dame, it’s tank city, why the fuck are you holding on to redundant pieces, it was the season to clear the logjam and clean the books and make trades and instead nothing happened, it’s basically the same roster as last year with Brogdon out and Avdija and Clingan in, but for what?
If it wasn’t gamble by the FO to get the maximum value for Simons then I don’t understand why they didn’t pull the trigger on a trade, there’s no way that no team wanted him last season, but what’s the point of trying to win every trade and overvalue everybody, after you literally handed over Norm Powell and CJ and Nance like gift cards to the Clippers/Pels, if there’s a time when you don’t need to win a trade it’s now, nobody is gonna risk their future for a non-star player especially with the new CBA. Maybe I’m tripping but the decision is just mind boggling to me not to trade Simons, this situation was inevitable. And I understand why they waited with the center situation since Timelord was injured, but the guard situation is something I can’t wrap my hand around.
