Cincinnati Bearcats basketball recruit Shon Abaev to attend Georgia Tech game in Atlanta
Scott Springer
Cincinnati Enquirer
ATLANTA – Schedules seem to work out sometimes and they certainly did Friday night for the Cincinnati Bearcats basketball coaching staff as prized recruit Shon Abaev was in town playing at the Overtime Elite Arena, not far from where UC was to face Georgia Tech on Saturday.
Abaev’s team won 82-73 and the crowd saw a player with length who can bring the ball up the floor, create shots and make threes and free throws. Though it admittedly wasn’t his best night, his final stat line was 17 points, nine rebounds, five assists, one steal and a block.
6-foot-8 Shon Abaev is a left-handed guard/forward who has been lighting up his senior season playing for Fear of God Athletics in the Overtime Elite League. The Cincinnati Bearcats are pursuing Abaev and their coaching staff was present to watch him play Friday night.
He wasn’t playing at your run-of-the-mill high school gym. Overtime Elite Arena is palatial in comparison. It’s a major sports complex in a major city with most of the players on the floor heading to Division I schools. There are lights, effects, introductions and cameras everywhere.
“Shon’s had the camera on him since ninth or 10th grade,” Fear of God coach Cilk McSweeney said.
It’s a full-scale basketball production which makes a player like Abaev all the more valuable. For UC in the Big 12, he would be basketball and media savvy and used to boisterous crowds.
Saturday, Abaev and his team will play again, but not without visiting Wes Miller and the Cincinnati Bearcats at McCarnish Pavilion when they play Georgia Tech.
Shon Abaev NCAA basketball opportunities
Crystal-balled by nearly every recruiting site around, Abaev has yet to officially commit to the Cincinnati Bearcats. That could be coming soon. He did speak on his recent visit to Cincinnati and his thoughts on the Bearcats. Abaev says UC’s been recruiting him aggressively and he has a good relationship with Wes Miller.
Miller’s crew was sitting behind one of the baselines at Abaev’s game. Though he had his lowest scoring output thus far with 17 points, Abaev has had attention on his basketball skills for a few years now and said he doesn’t feel much pressure no matter who watches.
“I’m used to this, Abaev said. “I’ve been doing this for a long time already. It’s just a regular game for whoever’s in the crowd.”

Shon Abaev basketball scouting report
Though he’s the same height as Simas Lukošius and can rebound underneath, Abaev offers ball skills good enough to bring the ball up the floor. He likes the term point forward and he could team up with recent signee Keyshuan Tillery in the backcourt should he select the red and black.
“They want me to come in and lead the team from the start,” Abaev said. “They see me as the main player when I come in. Just doing that and helping them win a national championship if I go there.”
Abaev enjoyed the city of Cincinnati on his visit and envisioned it as a place his family might enjoy. He also has familiarity with UC Associate Head Coach Chad Dollar who has kept in close touch.
