[Thibodaux] Ballot #1 is from Jimmy Golen… No adds or drops for returning candidates. Ichiro Suzuki and CC Sabathia receive their first Hall of Fame votes.

  1. People really hold the Astros stuff against Beltran huh. Really should be an easy HOFer

I… didn’t realize how unpopular this would be

  2. Wow a post on an app that doesn’t immediately block showing me the post if I don’t sign up for an account.

  3. If you’re strictly anti-PED and sign stealing, this is a totally defensible ballot. Not a perfect one, but I expect MUCH worse in the coming days and weeks.

  4. Billy Wagner is really good, but I’m surprised there’s a vote for him but not King Felix. One of these days Pettite will get some love too.

  5. this incoming class of candidates is crazy with some really interesting discussions. tons of “hall of very good” here.

zobrist, cargo, grandy, felix, kinsler, pedroia, martin, hanley, mccann, tulo… they aren’t all hof or anything but you could reasonably defend a vote for any one of them.

(okay fine cargo is a stretch but he was a key face of that era of rockies. him and justin morneau feel eerily similar for their adequate-but-unspectacular role on important eras of mid market teams)

  6. I’m a big hall guy so dislike all small ballots but as far as small ballots go this is a totally defensible “no cheaters” ballot

  7. Am I crazy for thinking that Andruw’s career arc really harms his chances? He has 60+ WAR yes, but his swift decline at age 30 wasn’t due to injury, he basically ate himself out of the league. Voting that dude in just doesn’t feel good.

I have a hard time with picking CC and not Pettitte, strikeouts aside their numbers are extremely similar. Pettitte’s HGH use was allegedly very brief and he apologized for it, and it was during his career down swing from 2002-2004 and really doesn’t account for his longevity. But I suppose if you’re an absolute purist on PED’s you’d have to exclude him.

And I think Utley and Beltran have enough of a case that I certainly hope they get enough votes to hang around and continue that discussion.

  8. Ehhh…. I don’t think Jones should be a HOFer… and I’m on the line w Wagner …. But Cc and Ichiro should be locks tho.

  9. Going to be interesting to see if CC will be first ballot and if Ichiro will be unanimous.

  10. I don’t think this is that good of a ballot, leaving off sign stealers and steroid guys but including Jones who has faced domestic abuse allegations. Including Wagner but leaving off Francisco Rodriguez. Just not as clean after first glance

  11. i know i’m in the minority here but i just cannot get behind a guy with only 900 career innings being in the hall of fame, and i especially take exception to voting for wagner and not felix. had felix been a closer, there’s no doubt in my mind that he’d have been better than wagner was, but he was too good to be in the bullpen. and if your entire career is only 100 games worth of innings, you’re not even *eligible* unless you’re a one inning reliever. and the strictly one inning reliever has only existed for the last few decades.

felix from 2009-2014 alone had only a 0.1 higher WHIP (1.099 compared to wagner’s 0.998), but threw 1394 innings compared to wagner’s 903. and that’s completely ignoring half of felix’s career.

i think it’s dumb that the bar is so much lower for relievers than it is for starters — wagner could NEVER do what felix did, and felix absolutely put the mariners on his back with a workload unheard of today, only to probably get punished for it by the voters.

not saying wagner wasn’t great at what he did — he was. but if you’re throwing fewer than 90 innings a year, you should have to be better than great to get in, especially when guys like felix, bobby abreu, johan santana, etc are getting passed over for having a much bigger impact on their team’s success and playing much more of the game.

  12. If I had a vote, I’d vote for Ichiro, Wagner, Andruw Jones, and Felix.

It’s amusing seeing Russell Martin there. I absolutely love the guy, but I don’t see him as HOF material.
