I've come up with a theory as to what happened to the Arizona Coyotes goal horn after they left Glendale.

The Arizona Coyotes used a Kahlenberg Q3 as their goal horn in Glendale since they moved there in 2003. They played their last game there in the spring of 2022. Then, in the fall of 2023, the Detroit Red Wings debuted their "new" goal horn, which is (you guessed it) a Kahlenberg Q3.

Now, the goal horn in Detroit sounds more like the Florida Panther's goal horn, which makes sense because the Florida Panthers ALSO use a Kahlenberg Q3. Also, the acoustics of the arena do, in fact, have something to do with the overall tone of a goal horn, and the layout of Little Ceasars Arena is more similar to FLA Live Arena.

Additionally, the Kahlenberg Q3 CAN BE TUNED to sound different. The Chicago Blackhawks started the goal horn tradition with a Kahlenberg Q3 (which they still use today) dangling from the jumbotron. The Sabers liked the idea so much that they decided to follow suit and get a Kahlenberg Q3 of their own; however, they TUNED IT to sound different.

So, the fact that Detroit got their Kahlenberg Q3 a year after the Yotes stopped using theirs, AND the fact that a Kahlenberg Q3 can sound different thanks to arena acoustics, AND the fact that a Kahlenberg Q3 goal horn can also be tuned to sound different leads me to believe that the Arizona Coyotes' old goal horn was bought by the Detroit Red Wings, where it now sits in the rafters of Little Ceasars Arena.

After all the Red Wings have done to the Coyotes, I hope more than anything that my theory is wrong, but it is probable.

If anyone knows what actually happened to the Coyotes' goal horn, please tell us.

Also, if you can disprove my theory, please do because the thought of our old goal horn now being used for a team that beat us so many times makes me sick.

(Edit: A large source of my research came from N2B Goal Horns' video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccelUnUP93E&t=833s&ab_channel=N2BGoalHorns )

  1. The most likely explanation is that Meruelo just left it in Glendale like he did everything else.

  2. As a lifelong red wings fan that has lived in Phx since 2009, I’m a fan of both teams. I love hockey and this town feels empty without it.

Former redwings and tigers owner Mike illitch (rip) had way more than enough money and funding to buy a brand new one – he didn’t need to buy used, and often mentioned that the fans always deserve the best options. I don’t see him buying a used one – and you’re right – they did tune the “new” LCA horn to sound like the old JLA horn. I remember reading news about that many years ago.

Is it impossible that it’s in LCA? No.

    Is it likely? Also no.
