NASCAR Cup Series driver Ty Gibbs will be making his USAC National Midget debut this weekend at California’s Ventura Raceway during the Turkey Night Grand Prix. Gibbs will be piloting a Midget out of the Chad Boat Industries stable.

2024 USAC Turkey Night Grand Prix at Ventura Raceway

Saturday night’s race will mark not only Gibbs’ USAC debut, but also his Midget debut. However, it will not be the first time Gibbs races an open-wheel car on dirt. Gibbs actually got started racing in Outlaw Karts at North Carolina’s Millbridge Speedway before he transitioned over to pavement to begin his path to the NASCAR Cup Series.

Since then, Gibbs has gone on to win the ARCA Menards Series championship and a NASCAR Xfinity Series championship. In 2024, Gibbs qualified for the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs and finished 15th in points.

Joe Gibbs Racing, which employs Ty Gibbs, three-time Chili Bowl champion Christopher Bell, Chase Briscoe, and Denny Hamlin recently announced that they just reversed their near-total ban on dirt racing and will now allow their drivers to race on dirt as long as they receive the “necessary approvals” from upper management.

Gibbs, the grandson of team owner Joe Gibbs, is the first driver out of the JGR stable to race an open wheel car on dirt following the announcement of the team’s new policy.
