41. John is the only commentator I've heard that understands the technicalities of the Darnold situation. A 1-2 year deal means Kwesi can spread the cap hit around a bit. The franchise tag is less flexible in terms of the cap, but gives Kwesi power and leverage.
    I really think the Sam vs JJ conversation is a red herring. The better question might be what is Sam worth in a trade? 41 year old declining Rodgers returned picks 13, 42, 207, and 41 the next year. If Sam is worth anywhere near that, extending him or tagging him at $41m is a no brainer. The acquiring club would pick up a chunk of the contract so in a way signing Sam becomes a way of shifting some cap into the future.
    JJ will be 22 next year and missed a season of football. If Kwesi extends Sam, he can start until KOC is 100% ready to shift to JJ, whether that be in 2025 or 2026. And when Sam is traded he should leave a legacy of 2 or 3 premium draft picks to bolster the roster for JJ.
    I think extending Sam is a formality, not a question.
    The question might be whether Kwesi can sign Daniel Jones as well at back up rates, and repeat the cycle with him. He is another potential trade chip, or a back up or transition to JJ, if they trade Sam sooner (2025 draft night) rather than later.
    What if Kwesi tags Sam, and gets a call on draft night from the Titans who have given up on Levis, and want to swap 1st rounders with the Vikes (plus sweeteners?) for Sam? The Vikes draft Ashton Jeanty at 6 to pair with McCarthy from day 1???
