Per ESPN, largest contract every for a lefty pitcher.

Didn't take Cash Man much time to pivot off of Soto, did it?

The AAV isn't that high in today's world, but eight years for a pitcher fixing to go on the far side of 30?

Speaking of Soto, I'd think that with Soto and Fried both off the boards, other free agent dominoes will start falling.

  1. I think the 8 years is to offset the low AAV. Rather than pay him a lot each year for a shorter amount of time, pay him less over a longer period of time. Allows them to have more payroll flexibility year to year, and room to sign more players to address more pressing concerns (left field, 1B, etc)

  2. Good for him…hate to see him go but we wouldn’t have given him a 6 year deal, let alone 8.

  3. Fried is a phenomenal pitcher and a warrior. As an Atlanta fan, I was convinced his career was over at one point in 2024 and especially in 2023. He fought through forearm issues both times, which is commendable. But I looked at that contract and was happy it wasn’t us. I wouldn’t feel good about giving him a three-year deal. His next forearm injury is likely to end his career.

  4. I hate to lose him, but he’s been an injury magnet for years. Yankees will be lucky to get 5 years out of him, and even luckier to get three FULL years.

I wish him luck, nonetheless. Gonna be very hard to replace him in ATL.
