Tag n trade. Get a ransom for him. He’s ranked top five in many categories
Pat wasn't having any of that contract crap.
Results. Physical Ability. Mental Ability. Technique. Four completely different things that casual fans conflate all the time. Results are highly dependent on other factors. Physical ability can't be taught. Mental ability and technique can improve over time.
Players aren't good or bad in a vacuum.
I say sign sam then trade him. Vikings has jj and danny dimes. And .mullins.
Anybody ever figure out why cousins had so much success in Minnesota? And now it's struggling, it's because it's the offense, why these guys are playing so. Well, you just need a halfway competent quarterback. So sure I would sign Sam, but he better come cheap.
The Vikings have been doing this half in half out, "anyone can succeed in our system so lets not commit to(insert passable QB) just yet" thing for like 10 years now. At a certain point youre gonna have to take a chance and pay somebody. Why not take it on the guy who's more than young enough and just showed you what he can do for an entire season?
is sam a “proven winner” tho? even if he does win a playoff game i think this season with the way kirk looks in atl and how sam looked on the jets and 9ers it’s almost entirely the pieces around sam and KOC so i dont see how he’ll be able to demand $40-50m a year in the league off of this one season that was mostly an amazing system tailored to qbs by KOC. that also makes it even more likely that MN won’t be willing to give him a huge contract cause they can just keep daniel jones and do the same thing they did w kirk and sam and at least jones already has won playoff games so
JJ is an injury prong.
Yes! Join the DARNY ARMY!!!!
Franchise tag him for one more year and see how it goes
He turns down a ton of money to play for a good coach, weather that be MN, SF… but he'd be a fool to take the gold truck from NYG, Vegas Raiders, Cleve Browns or those chumps down south.
The Vikings are in love with the idea of making a Super Bowl run and building around a QB on a rookie contract. Vikings moneyballed this defense and are incredibly lucky to have a guy like Brian Flores that is making them look this good with such little star-power. Imagine how much better it would be if they take the money they would give to Darnold and spend it on a legitimate DT and CBs. Flores would build a scary Defense.
Everyone needs to keep in mind that this performance was against a very weak Falcons pass D. Let's wait and see if he can do it in the playoffs week after week. A few weeks ago people were saying they knew Darnold was too good to be true after the offense struggled badly vs. the Jaguars. It would be foolish for the Vikings to pay him before the season ends.
As a Vikings fan, by all means I hope he wins a Super Bowl and we give him whatever contract he wants. Rehabilitating his career and bringing Minnesota their first Super Bowl would make this team go down in history. Shoot, 60 million would be well deserved. However, my prediction is a possible divisional round exit and they give him the same offer they gave to Kirk and stand their ground saying take it or leave it. If KOC lets Darnold walk he has to know he can at least get Darnold level of play out of McCarthy. McCarthy was looking great before his injury and KOC knows he can run this offense.
I trust KOC.. Franchise Sam and trade him. JJ McCarthy starts in 2025 and beyond. Spend the money on the rest of the team. We had an OK QB making 40-50mill and we sucked.
It would be the ultimate Vikings Wrong Move to let him go. You stumbled on a MVP level playing QB on an experimental year.
Nobody is acknowledging the elephant in the room, ESPN outside of McAfee rail against white QBs getting deals or extensions. Canty was literally saying Purdy hasn't proven anything yet. Meanwhile for black QBs they will come to tears on air fighting for their lives on mid talent.
Case keenum 2.0, i say let someone else overpay for him.
We're watching Sam finally mature properly in the better system. He's super accurate on his normal days. His decision making seems to be turning a corner. The best part i like is his feel for escaping the pocket, which is an oversighted and very important skill for a winning quarterback. Vikes have to offer him 20-30mil/year. Sam might get offered more but he has to understand his performance will most likely go down on any other team. He'll have to decide whether to chase the W's or the cha-ching.
In Sam Darnold's head and spirit, does he want to make more money on another team risking his success with the Vikings? Or he might be willing to take a pay cut with the team he is thriving with. Will he be as successful with another organization?
'
They have to extend him. Good QB is a matter of luck not a matter of planning. Even Andy Reid and Bellichick needed the luck to get QB. How many 1st round QBs turn out to be capable starters? Not many. If someone already shows he can be a good starter, you need all in.
Baker is underpaid
One thing we learned about the Vikings is that it's the system, not the QB. Cousins had success, Dobbs had success, Hall was looking good until he forgot how to slide, even going back to Case Keenum. Darnold has earned a deal in the 5-year range, which is not what the Vikings should be giving. If Darnold will sign a 2-year deal in the 30M range per season, then go for it… but he's earned himself more years and a better guarantee than that.
3:28 – QBs fail coming out of the draft because the franchises fail them. Time, patience, coaching, and talent around them are all more important factors.
The Jets should trade Rogers for Darnold.
Why are we talking about Darnold like he's 35 and lost his opportunity? He's played great. Why worry about what JJ could become when Sam has become that now?
At worst I could think they want to use him as an asset to trade away, but why trade the A tier talent for the A tier potential?
let's all hope Sammy gets a ring then the Vikes can worry about signing him long term
Let his sit behind a vet for 2-3 years like Jordan Love. As a Vikings fan i expected maybe 9-8 season at best this has been unreal.
Daniel Jones had a great contract handed to him after one above average year, remember the "Danny Dimes" nickname? A rough call coming up for the Vikings.
Maybe Franchise Him,Then Trade Him For Picks High Draft Picks,But I Think The Vikings Are Strapped For Money.
As a Vikings fan I absolutely hated signing Sam, I was 100% wrong I hope Sam get PAID!!
If darnold wants to stay just let JJ and him compete for starter position if you they can develop each other an get to a Super Bowl that’s what really matters ur always ganna make money but it’s rare to win a Super Bowl.
If ain’t broke …
Stick with what’s working 🤙
If he takes them to the NFC championship it's hard to not pay him. All we need is Zach Wilson to explode as a starter to really start saying "alright what's going on here" to the Jets
I say let Darnold play again next year, and let JJ sit another year or two. The extra time will only help him develop. 9 out of 10 QBs cannot start right away,,,,they gotta learn the system. Those who start right away will play themself out of the league in no time.
JJ is learning a whole lot from Darnold and he needs another 2 years to sit and learn if at all possible.
Sam Darnold is overrated, and the Vikings are winning despite him, not because of him. He's playing above average, but it's not sustainable.. his accuracy and decision making are still Jets-level. What is Pat talking about with his accuracy? He constantly throws behind the receiver, they're always adjusting to his throws, he flat out misses receivers altogether.
Bruh, just let Darnold play and pay the guy for beating expectations and at the same time let the rookie sizzle. When Darnold's done or retires, the rookie, with all the knowledge and experience from his time practicing soaking up everything, he'll be primed and ready to go.
Darnold gets at least one more year as you reset the JJ McCarthy thing. He should get two years but another team might offer more than the Vikings can match
The Vikings are hoping McCarthy eventually plays at the level Darnold is now. Sam is bigger, has a stronger arm, just as mobile, and has already gone through NFL growing pains. Minnesota has already locked up Jefferson & Darrisaw long-term. And are eating all the dead cap hits this season. The Vikings will have 78 million to spend in free agency next offseason. They can easily sign Darnold to a short-term deal.
Very unlikely. The Vikes just moved on from Kirk because they didn’t want to pay a middle of the pack QB $45 million, so they’d be able to build an actual team around the rookie contract. You think they’re gonna pay a different middle of the pack QB and waste the rookie contract?
People didn’t think the Vikes would let Kirk walk, then people didn’t believe the Vikings would be good basically BECAUSE of Sam Darnold, now people think they need to keep Darnold. They have a great team, if they pay Darnold they’ll lose out on some of that. How did Darnold do when he had crappy infrastructure/bad team with the Jets and Panthers? He’s never been a guy that makes up for his team’s shortcomings, maybe he can be, but even a playoff win or 2 this year wouldn’t prove that he can make up for deficiencies that his team would have with him making that much. This team doesn’t have those deficiencies/shortcomings so he can’t prove it this year.
JJ McCarthy at $10 mil/yr for 4 years >> Sam Darnold at $40 mil/yr for 3 years and then only have 1 year of JJ playing on his rookie deal to decide if he’s worth $70 mil or whatever QBs will be making in 4 years.
Somebody finally talking bout the Vikings feels good regardless of the circumstances lol
Love Darnold hes done amazing for us
I would assume we let him find a new team, have Daniel Jones/JJ as the qbs next year
Darnold deserves a big pay day but i dont think its smart for the VIkings to give it to him. Unless you have one of the real elites i think it is better to have a cheap option with great team and structure around them
Maybe Sam just wants to stay! Unlike Cousins Sam takes a team friendly contract to see where this takes him!
