DALLAS – Even the manager who watched his team sign Shohei Ohtani for $700 million a year ago did a double take at Juan Soto’s $765 million deal with the New York Mets this week.
“I didn’t see that happening, period,” Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “I was very surprised.”
Imagine the reverberation levels of the shock down baseball’s economic food chain.
Juan Soto laughs with Elly De La Cruz during the Reds’ series at Yankee Stadium in July.

“I was shocked when I saw the bonus. My goodness,” Cincinnati Reds manager Terry Francona said.
In roughly the same time frame as the Soto decision with the Mets, another Soto suitor, the Dodgers, pivoted to a short-term deal for outfielder Michael Conforto, while the Soto-finalist Yankees have reportedly realigned their sights toward free agent infielders Christian Walker, a first baseman, and Alex Bregman, a third baseman — with yet another Soto finalist, the Red Sox, also said to be targeting Bregman.
Meanwhile, the Reds’ division rivals in St. Louis spelled out their intent Monday to try to trade star third baseman Nolan Arenado.
The Reds, who already made a big offseason splash by bringing back pitcher Nick Martinez (above) and trading for starting pitcher Brady Singer, are not believed to be in play of big ticket items such as Christian Walker and Alex Bregman.
The Reds aren’t swimming in any of those deep waters for players after settling much of their pitching questions with the return of Nick Martinez ($21.05 million qualifying offer) and the trade for Brady Singer for Jonathan India.
But with Matt McLain returning from injury (with a plus glove) to the middle infield, the outfield looks in most flux with the most room for upgrades.
Krall rattled off Spencer Steer, TJ Friedl, Stu Fairchild and Jake Fraley when talking about his outfield.
“hite Sox outfielder Luis Robert Jr. would seem to answer the Reds’ needs of a slugging outfielder, but he would have to be acquired by trade and comes with a $15 million salary in 2025.
Maybe with a center fielder? Free agent Michael A. Taylor could improve the collective fielding. A trade for Luis Robert Jr. of the White Sox could offer a two-way upgrade if he can stay healthy, albeit attached to a $15 million salary in 2025. The Reds are one of several teams to have at least checked in on Robert.
Veteran right fielder Jason Heyward amounts to a platoon bat at this point, but he’s a excellent clubhouse guy who can still catch the ball and isn’t likely to cost a lot.

No, outfield
Paul Goldschmidt! Put CES in AAA to build his hitting and fielding back up!
the reds as an organization need to decide if they are in the business to win games or make money. Its been a long time since the reds have been in the business to win.
Reds just need to grab 1-2 of the best offense upgrades they can get. Given some of the flexibility they have on defense, worry about positioning later
May I introduce you to Spencer Steer, your starting First Baseman after The Reds get Two Outfielders.
They need to go for the Division this upcoming season, not kick the can down the road and hope for 2026
They do not need a first baseman they already have one what are you talking about they need power right-handed outfielder You're an idiot there's that
Dude you don't know baseball is that bingo hatch you guys sitting there tells it all you don't know anything about baseball you got to let the player learn to grow we just can't bring somebody else in them sit the bench Where's that going to do nothing you don't know anything about baseball so try again
You don't know baseball very good we need outfielders we don't need first baseman You're a joke The outfielders we got is not cutting it there's that
Valdy JR. If only they could.
We need a low K rate .300+ hitter. 30 HR would be a nice bonus.
Are Reds just supposed to give up on CES and Marte?
We have to make a bet somewhere. CES needs to be our 1b next year so we can go get some OF.
