Ortiz’s 2024 Statcast Page

  1. I’m seeing posts like “why would they give up Ortiz for Horwitz?” and I don’t think people realize that Ortiz’s underlying numbers were far worse than his baseline numbers last year, which suggests he won’t be able to maintain his performance from last year going forward. He didn’t strike guys out, he was average at walks and gave up a lot of fly balls, that’s not a recipe for sustained long-term success. It’s similar to Falter’s problems, who I’m also wildly skeptical repeats his 2024 performance next year.

To me, this was the Pirates both buying high on Horwitz and selling high on Ortiz. Cleveland is great at getting value out of pitchers so I can see them unlocking something with him, but I would have expected a massive regression for Ortiz next year due to his inconsistent supporting pitches and low strikeout rates.

  2. I look at last year as one of the best scenarios for Ortiz. Horwitz has a skill set more replicable than Ortiz, plus we need hitters. I don’t love the trade , but I think it makes sense

  3. Does this still mean Reynolds part time 1B & DH? The more I look at it the trade looks good for both sides which is what should happen.

  4. I think everyone is mad that we traded a spot starter with an extension rate in the 71st percentile, those don’t grow on trees.
