MFW reading about “listening” to trades and payroll cuts after last year’s “just resetting luxury tax” posts

  1. I will reserve judgment until we see the roster on opening day. Last year at this time it was more bleak since we traded Soto and had tons of holes. Turned out 2024 was a pretty great year even though it ended terribly.

  2. Y’all Debbie downers said the same shit last year and you saw the team they put on the field. It’s a long off season. Don’t fall for the rumor mill without a legitimate source.

  3. Wait till the All Star Break.

Remember the pitch forks when we “lost” Melvin. Fuck the rumor mill.

  4. I mean you’re also assuming that if Peter was still alive he’d still have his checkbook open. He wasn’t that rich. He’d have had to make cuts and compromises on spending. MLB would have put pressure on the team for the debt ratio.

Remember Peter for his dream and willingness to spend to see it to fruition. Don’t worship him to make it easier for you to hate new ownership making decisions beyond your (our) understanding.

  5. Last off season felt way more bleak and AJ was on a heater. I trust him to trade Cease and get a return that helps us get better.

Heyman seemed to suggest they are talking about trading Crone and or X. Which would give us loads more flexibility going forward.

Not even getting into Sasaki potential.

  6. I think Pete only went all out because he had cancer. I think we all know it was unsustainable.

  7. AJ cooked last off-season when we thought it was over after trading Soto. He even pulled off a deal right before the Korean series. Gotta wait till Opening Day.

  8. I think the ramp up in payroll was only by Peter’s design knowing his time was short and he wanted to make that hard push. I’m pretty sure the plan was always to be fiscally responsible and make a team that wasn’t top heavy with a depleted farm system. You want to have a team that can compete for years and years. Plus the loss of the TV deal didn’t help matters so I think it’s safe to say that shedding payroll might not be worst thing in the world and might offer future flexibility.

  9. There’s a lot of “don’t be a doomer” in this thread, but can we really deny that the current ownership is not going to shell out the same $$$ that Pete did? I don’t think we can.

  10. Fair weather fans finding out that Preller is always listening to trades will never stop being hilarious.

  11. They built a great team last despite everyone claiming they couldn’t spend money or would fire sell the team. They have plenty of money.

  12. I never expected the money train to keep going. I just hope the payroll stays at a competitive level. This is why I get critical of these over-reaching contracts (Xander, Cro, Suarez, etc) and continual mega-flushing of the farm system, it’s not sustainable. We did likely see a dying billionaire’s go-out-spending-spree and that ride is over. Probably going to be a while before we see another nine figure deal get handed out. The family honoring Peter’s memory is a nice thought but they also have a business(es) to run and the way they run things could just be different than the PS way. This is Preller’s time to shine. Throwing money around at guys is easy. Making fiscally-conscious, baseball-first moves is what good GMs have to do.

  13. Has there been any info on when a permanent control person will take over? I don’t think Kutsenda is allowed to spend a lot of money as he isn’t apart of the trust and probably has a fiduciary responsibility to make it as profitable as possible.
