MLB trade news: Are Pirates, Ben Cherington thinking too small with Spencer Horwitz deal?
Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey reacts to the Pirates’ trade for 1B Spencer Horwitz. Is GM Ben Cherington thinking too small in addressing the position with a player who still has many question marks? Did he give up too much in sending Luis Ortiz and two pitching prospects to the Cleveland Guardians in the deal? And does this deal send an ominous message about what’s to come for this team in MLB free agency and the trade market as the Winter Meetings continue?
Jason tackles those questions, then ponders what the George Pickens injury could mean for coach Mike Tomlin, QB Russell Wilson and the Steelers in an NFL Week 15 matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles. He also gives his thoughts on possible discord between Eagles QB Jalen Hurts and WR A.J. Brown.

Being way too critical on this. I think it is a great move. You traded a 5th starter and two guys that 3 years grom now will still be 7th or 8th in the depth chart.
This trade might work out but it seems we traded 3 pitchers for the modern day Craig Wilson. But he had some good years…lol
I like the move. First base needs to be settled. Reynolds returns to left field, Oneil Cruz in center, and nobody in right. So to upgrade a solid power hitter looks like a no brainer!
Id rather have Ortiz as long reliever spot stater than trust Ben Cherington`s grade school knowledge of hitters.
You sound like a typical Pirate fan. You don't care how good the player is, the important thing is that the Pirates spend money. He can't possibly be good if they don't drop a bundle on him. I suppose you think they should have offered a long term contract to a 32 year old.
Basically like a 27 yr old rookie….. cherington is a clown…. Matt Hague said good things so let’s go get him!!! lol give me a break
