No Cats vs. Canucks tomorrow!
That game was the epitome of Tocchet hockey.
We hounded the Panthers on the forecheck, backchecked hard, turned the neutral zone into a battleground, didn’t give them any easy entries, protected the guts of the ice, and were netfront bullies.
The lack of rush offense that our team has generated this season has been widely bemoaned. When you play a system as defensively committed as ours, where our forwards consistently play deep in the defensive zone, it necessitates aggressively disrupting breakouts and forcing turnovers to launch counterattacks.
One of the biggest deficiencies in our play this season has been soft neutral zone defense, and the lack of rush offense is downstream of this. As we saw tonight, tight and proactive neutral zone play manufactures that missing rush offense without compromising our defensive structure.
The 2015 Blackhawks played a counterattacking style of hockey very similar to ours when we’re at our best. It’s absolutely a championship calibre strategy, but requires elite two-way talent and cohesion up & down the line-up.
We have the talent, but have had the cohesion inconsistently. Seeing games like last night’s sparks some optimism that we’ll find it when it matters.
Blankinen and Snatcher might be one of the best, if not the best goalie combos in the league right now. I know Demmers has been untested this year but if he’s truly back to full strength, it’s the kind of thing that other teams **dread**. There is no backup, only walls
1-0 in the Miller Returns era
Fun game! No more black skate jersey at home though, right? That thing is cursed this season!
