In 1990, I reached out to the Reds about working for them in the field of data/statistics. They were kind enough to respond. Here is the letter they wrote to me.

  1. Man, this is such a gem! You were way ahead of the curve—back when data and baseball weren’t even in the same conversation yet.

  2. Seriously; this is both hilarious and historic. Keep this, it might just make a museum someday 🙂

  3. This is really cool. Forgive my ignorance, but this was the wire to wire season? What a job that would’ve been!

  4. Awfully nice of them to recommend local companies, but then again it was 1990. I’m not too sure how many statistical analytics companies their would of been. That’s really cool you held on to it all these years.

  5. You were 17 years old and thinking about statistical analysis in baseball before it was really a thing? That’s crazy, you were way ahead of the curve, good for you.

  6. Maybe we wouldn’t have had to wait since 1990 for another WS had they hopped on that analytics train…

  7. I got Bill James Baseball Abstract every year for Christmas. I also wanted to work in baseball & sent letters to every team but wasn’t as focused as you on stats. I really dreamed of being a GM. The Reds publicity VP had a great rep … former Dayton newspaper beat writer.

I ended up interning for the Reds summer of ‘91 in tix, the Columbus Clippers in ‘93 in PR and worked minor league baseball 5 years in Wichita!

  8. Wow this is awesome! What would you have proposed at that time? Had you done any sort of portfolio proposition of the types of analysis you would provide?

Thanks for sharing, that’s a great keepsake.
