In 1990, I reached out to the Reds about working for them in the field of data/statistics. They were kind enough to respond. Here is the letter they wrote back to me.

  1. Way ahead of your time, haha.

Ya know what the Reds really could’ve used in 1990? *Moneyball*.

  2. You should make a copy and send it back to them asking if they’re hiring for the position now

  3. you wouldn’t want to work for Marge Schott anyway. you’d probably be put in charge of picking up after Schottzie

  4. Funny thing, in the 90’s, I applied to and was accepted to watch games and compile data and report it to the company for pay. After reading the requirements, I decided it would be too much work, LoL. They wanted, the type of pitch, situation (runners on base, how many outs, etc) pitch location, foul direction, etc.

  5. When I wrote them the same thing they said that they knew of no professional baseball team that employs a full-time statistician as there’s a drive into deep left field by Castellanos, it will be a home run. And so that will make it a 4–0 ballgame. – I don’t know if I’m gonna be putting on this headset again. I don’t know if it’s gonna be for the Reds, I don’t know if it’s gonna be for my bosses at Fox. I want to apologize for the people who sign my paycheck – for the Reds, for Fox Sports Ohio, for the people I work with, for anybody that I’ve offended here tonight. I can’t begin to tell you how deeply sorry I am. That is not who I am. It never has been. And I’d like to think maybe I could have some people … that could back that up. I am very, very sorry, and I beg for your forgiveness. Jim Day will take you the rest of the way home.
