How on earth is The Gator (Ron Guidry ) not in the HOF ?

  1. Sportswriters vote and if they didn’t personally care for a player as a person they become extremely petty. Stats don’t matter.

  2. i feel that the veteran’s committee will vote him in, they seem much more lenient than the bbwaa

  3. Why he was an average pitcher 170 wins. He had one great year and two or three really good ones out of 14 seasons. Just because the Yankees retired his number and hung a plaque in Monument Park does equate to the HoF,

  4. Not a long enough period of dominance. To reduce it to WAR, which I do think is overly reductive, but can be explanatory, there’s one MVP level season, two to four other all star level seasons, and that’s it out of thirteen seasons.

  5. Because he doesn’t deserve to be in the hall?

If you can’t crack 50 WAR, you don’t even get real consideration.

Coming from a Phillies fan (knowing Jimmy won’t make it with his WAR 😢)

  6. It’s the Hall of Fame…not the Hall of Very Good. Many players in every HoF, don’t deserve to be there.

  7. Because he doesn’t belong in the hall of fame. Just because a player has a couple of great seasons doesn’t mean they belong in the hall. Maris had the single season home run record for decades and he isn’t in either. Guidry’s counting stats aren’t good enough (only 170 wins and 1700 k’s in an era where 300+ wins and 3000+ strikeouts were considered HOF numbers) and his dominant period was only a few seasons. Even though his cy young season was incredible, there have been better seasons (Gibson’s 1.12 ERA, Pedro Martinez in 1999 and 2000), including a better one by Dwight Gooden who isn’t in the hall of fame. The hall of fame is for the all time greats, not guys who were great for a couple of seasons. Not every good player deserves to be in the hall of fame, because that just makes it less of an accomplishment. There are some guys in the hall of fame who shouldn’t be (Looking at you, Harold Baines) but just cause a few may slide through doesn’t mean that every all star caliber player needs to be in.

  8. Career longevity. He had 7-8 good seasons, 2 of those insanely good. Then after a 22-6 season (1985), the remainder of his career went down the tubes very fast. It wasn’t pretty. But that’s why he’s not in the HOF
