A report from Spain has claimed that Xavi Hernandez is in advanced talks over taking the head coach job at AC Milan, replacing Paulo Fonseca.

Conflicting news has come out regarding Fonseca’s future in recent days with some sources suggesting a bad result against Verona on Friday could see him sacked, but others believe he is safe for a while yet.

According to El Nacional (via MilanNews) – which is a Catalan-based source – Xavi Hernández seems to be close to returning to the dugout as he is in advanced negotiations with Milan. The Spaniard is currently without a team after being fired by Barcelona at the end of last season.

Xavi would get the chance to work with Rafael Leao, who was reportedly a transfer target when he was with Barca showing that he has an appreciation for the Portuguese winger.

At the moment the rumour seems rather far-fetched, but it is clear that Fonseca must begin to show that he has a grip on the situation both in relation to results and squad management.

Xavi was the manager of Al-Sadd in Qatar from July 2019 to November 2021, and then he became Barcelona boss until June 2024. He took charge of 143 games, with 91 wins, 23 draws, 29 losses, 280 goals scored and 158 against, winning LaLiga and the Supercopa.
