Goodbye, Jeffrey Springs | Locked On Rays
Left-handed pitchers Jeffrey Springs and Jacob Lopez have been traded to the Athletics as the Rays get RHP Joe Boyle, 1B/3B/OF Will Simpson, RHP Jacob Watters, and the team’s Comp-A draft pick, which falls between the first and second round of the coming draft.
-Springs shined in 2022, posting a breakout season with a 2.46 ERA across 33 appearances (25 starts)-Springs’ 2023 campaign was cut short due to an elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery after just three stellar starts-He returned late in 2024 with seven starts that were enough to show he’s on track to form.
Joe Boyle: 6’7’’, hard throwing righty, exceeded rookie limits in 2024. Great stuff but almost no control.
-had the worst BB% among qualified pitchers at 17.7% last year, and consequently had the lowest Chase rate at 19.3%.
-He tops out at 100 mph on his fastball, and has a slider and curveball that also grade in the 60’s on the 20-to-80 scale.-Will Simpson: corner infielder but addressed as OF in Passan’s tweet. Made AA debut for a bit and had a 155 wRC+ and 2 HR over 47 PA to end the year. The Rays have the:14th, 34th, 36th & 51st pick of the 2025 MLB Draft. Rays have roughly five of the top 70 picks.
Rays could use another OF, and an offensive-minded SS w/ the big-league club…Another pitcher for Rays on the move? (Trade prospect depth for MLB-proven talent, and add on some salary?)

Boyle is really, really good! He has electric stuff and will be a MLB closer within 2 years. I love Springs, but Rays maxed out on the trade. Round A pick is so so big! Just hoping Springs can be healthy and the Springs we know. We will see….
I’m a fan of Boyle and don’t mind this trade. But like you guys said, we need major league bats. Don’t know if I can stomach another season of Walls playing everyday
Good stuff, guys!
With Springs injury history, now was the time. Perfect storm w the A's needing to add salary.
I understand the frustration, but the A's bats are cost controlled. They aren't parting w those guys for an injury risk like Springs.
W the pick, this move is an A for me
Yandy will likely be next out the door once Alonso and Walker are signed. I still think Fairbanks is heading out as well.
The most amazing thing about this trade is that for the first time in almost four seasons it is the Sacramento, not Oakland A's, who are increasing their payroll adding an established major league player in exchange for prospects. This coming after their free agent signing of pitcher Luis Severino. Easily the highest salaried player on their team.
From a Rays standpoint, this is low risk, potential high reward. Jeffrey Springs injury history and recovery from it makes him questionable at best. Don't know how much if he figured into their 2025 plans anyway. Same with Lopez. Boyle could be a good addition. Not sure about Simpson or Watters. I agree with Ulises that it would have been better if the A's had included at least one established major league bat in the trade.
As much as i like this move i do wish they wouldve gotten an offensive bat in this trade. But cant wait to see what joe boyle brings to this team. Im sure he will give the rays some pump. I do believe Yandy will get moved sometime soon. Just do not want a repeat of last season where the offense wasn’t there.
Loved the promo for term life insurance – it is a very inexpensive way to provide security for your family. At 46, I took out a $700,000 15-year term policy (to supplement a $300,000 policy thru work) and I paid only $49.50 a month for the entire 15 years. It didn’t expire until I was 61 and my daughter was grown and through college. It gave me such peace of mind while my daughter was growing up and I was building my savings.
Springs should be back to full strength now.
Paredes, Siri, Springs….How f ing stupid can this team be?
