RIP
I remember that 2003 season. Elite pitching but we were so ASS offensively that we signed 44 year old Rickey to try to get something going. Such a frustrating year but at least I got to see one of my all time favorite players put in the Dodger blue
You’re the greatest, Rickey.
Oakland Tech Bulldog legend. Grew up watching him as a kid in Oakland with the A’s. Part of my childhood.
Honestly one of the most unbreakable records
I was 15 and it was so long ago but I think I have a faint memory of seeing him hit a homerun for us. That was such a weird time but I’m glad we were part of his legendary career. He was only a Dodger for a short time but I’m really sad about this news.
Without question my favorite player as a kid in the 80s and easily one of the half dozen greatest all around baseball players in history. He was box office, swag, and the definition of grinder before any of those terms became popular.
Thank goodness for Bill James and modern analytics, which separated the character “Rickey” who I loved, but the old school did not, so consequently never gave him the recognition he was due, from the player who essentially could have his numbers split and you’d still have two Hall of Fame careers. And, unlike Bonds or Clemens, his second HoF career didn’t come from suddenly having his best seasons ever in his late 30s.
He got there by being a special athlete put on this earth to simply do one thing; play baseball. So play he did, with maximum effort, every day of his life until his body would no longer allow him to play it with the level of respect he believed the game was due.
He will be missed. He was everything the game has been trying to bring back with the rule changes, and for good reason!
BTW: As a Dodger fan, I take some special pride that he hit the last HR of his legendary career wearing the Blue in a ballpark equal to his legend.
Rickey Henderson was so incredible that Jon Bois and Secret Base interrupted part 3 of their amazing Dave Stieb documentary to throw in a 15 minute mini-documentary within that documentary solely about Rickey’s 1989 ALCS performance called [God Mode](https://youtu.be/eaTCyQMyOu8?si=yPjY6w51dAJe3HwX&t=1095) and I couldn’t recommend it more.

RIP, Dodger legend
My favorite player playing for my favorite team. I’ve been thinking of getting his dodgers jersey.
