TIL about Mettle the Mule, who was the Mets mascot for a short time in 1976

  1. For those curious, the owner of the team got rid of Mr. Met and replaced him with a mule to drum up business (I believe it was the daughters or granddaughters who came up with the idea) and well the 1979 Mets were pretty atrocious so Mettle didn’t help much

  2. Old enough to remember. A true low point for Mets fandom. I remember my mother commenting that it was appropriate because Mets management were a bunch of jackasses.

  3. Mettle may have been the most memorable thing about the 76 season. At the end of 75 we traded Rusty Staub (who still had some years left in him as an everyday player) to the Tigers for a washed up Mickey Lolich because the latest Met “boy wonder” was ready to play everyday. That was Mike Vail. What does Mike do? – He dislocates his foot playing basketball right before spring training. He doesn’t return until June and hits .217 for the season while Rusty drives in close to 100 RBIs for the Tigers.

  4. Mettle was 1979. Basically the rock bottom year in Mets history (I know some will say 1993 and may have a point). The upper deck was completely closed off because no one was going to Shea anyway.
