[Nightengale] Corbin Burnes was offered more by the Giants and Blue Jays, but there is a big tax difference in Arizona.

  1. So it’s true then — this argument always pops up for NHL free agents.

Teams like Florida, Tampa, and Dallas vs Canadian teams like Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.

I think in the NHL if the player has a residence in the US, they get a bit of a break. And something along the lines of they get taxed at every away game in the city they’re at, or something like that (not 100% sure on this part). So it’s not as black and white as “there’s no taxes in Florida” – every player’s tax situation is a bit different

For MLB, I have no idea if it’s similar or how it works, but looks like there’s a big difference

  2. I feel like there should be some balancing there by the MLB, even if just for luxury tax purposes

  3. It’s stupid to not offer the difference when it continues to hurt your team by losing free agents this way.

  4. I like to imagine burnes submitted all 3 offers to his accountant and asked “what’s my cumulative net earnings from each offer”

  5. I’ve become accustomed to immediately rejecting any notion of a big FA signing with us the moment I hear any “insider” chatter about “front-runner this or that” so I already processed this weeks ago

  6. Ah, the mid-2010’s “sign with the Rockets/Spurs/Mavs to not pay income tax in Texas” signings have hit MLB.

(Side note: I don’t remember if that actually did happen on a decent scale in the NBA, I just know people talked about it)

  7. Lol the Orioles weren’t even in the top 3

I hate following this team in the off-season

  8. This isn’t solely about taxes. The Dodgers and Padres haven’t had any problems signing players to big contracts. The Giants just isn’t a desirable organization at the moment.

  9. I’m now projecting he has an ERA over 5.00 every season of his contract (I’m definitely not biased)

  10. That’s why you gotta “defer” but huge signing bonus like that genius dodgers organization. The level out the playing field between high taxed states and no income tax states. Goddam those dodgers are genius, I wish my pathetic padres can learn a thing or two

  11. Signing bonuses and deferrals, Corbin, signing bonuses and deferrals. State income tax is for little people!

  12. But I was assured he really wanted to play in California like, so badly dude. For really reals

  13. He’s going to get more than $200 million, and he’s worried about state income taxes?

  14. Taxes is a bullahit excuse. No one ever brings this up when discussing the dodgers. Burn bought a house in Arizona last year. He wanted to be there more than other cities. It’s a simple as that.

  15. Blue Jays are going to be straight garbage very shortly. Especially if they can’t extend Vlad. Having the amount of money Rogers has and continuously missing out on big free agents and the team never improving is so hilarious. I’m not sure there’s another GM in Atkins who has such undeserved job security

Prospects aren’t highly rated, Vlad and Bi both due to walk away. About to be sending out a lineup in a couple years headlined by Gimenez, varsho, and Davis Schneider
