This is a surprise.

  1. I can’t decide if I would have liked or hated that contract for Burnes for the Mets

The 6th year is probably going to be super rough. And if he doesn’t opt out after two years something has gone wrong and those last 4 years are going to be crazy rough.

Like I think I’d like 5 years $200mil with the opt out over 6 years $210mil lol

You also gotta wonder if they plan to trade a starter now.

The owner seems to really want Monty gone and Gallen will be a FA at the end of the season.

  2. Boob says the Giants and Blue Jays offered more, but state tax was the difference.

No one wants to go to Canada, yeesh.

  3. The Mets weren’t giving a $35M AAV over six years to a pitcher, through his age 30-35 seasons.

A three-four year deal would have been more appealing for the Mets. Interestingly, Burnes, reportedly, took less money from the Giants & Blue Jays, to sign with Arizona, due to the tax difference and for his current familial situation.

A rotation of Burnes, Gallen, Kelly, Rodriguez, & Pfaadt will be interesting to watch. Montgomery is absolutely getting traded.

Depending on what happens with Alonso and/or Bregman, the Mets will likely add another starting pitcher through a trade, since they have the necessary draft capital for it. However, if they manage to sign Sasaki, they may feel less inclined to do that.

  4. Would be nice to see some big name guys go to the fucking AL. The NL is so stacked comparatively. It’s like only the Yankees are allowed to sign guys in the AL. I guess the Astros did sign Walker but still.

  5. Wow that’s disappointing. It was reported the Mets weren’t looking at Burnes but I figured he was either signing late on a prove-it deal or someone was going to give him a ridiculous deal. This deal isn’t ridiculous. And he can opt out after 2026. This would’ve made sense for the Mets. Burnes better fall off a cliff in year 1 or 2 or this is a giant miss by the Mets.

  6. So far, the only pitcher I wish we got on the deal they received is Buehler. I was surprised he only got 1 year at 21. Seems like he could have gotten at least a player option second year like some of our recent deals.

  7. I guess if “had twins and want to stay near home” was a factor that’s kinda out of anyone else’s control.

  8. Feels like AZ weren’t tied to Burnes, but at the same time it does not surprise me. They seem to occasionally be the surprise team every few years.

  9. Our best move is to trade for a SP who has 1+ year of team control, like the chris bassett trade

  10. From what I understand from rumors they were in on Buehler. I mean at the very least they checked in to see about getting him. I’m sure they could’ve paid the same amount or more than Boston did if they had wanted to. Maybe he just preferred going to Boston, or maybe Stearns just wanted to pay less….

  11. Trade for a top of the rotation SP. Then continue to improve bullpen and starting rotation at trade deadline. We’re one, legit SP from being able to say that we’ll compete deep into the playoffs. Love this team and our direction but we’re still thin on pitching.
