Can’t wait for the dipshits who think he’s a career backup cause of not being able to start the whole season and 3 different ocs, pretend they have a better idea of his potential than Gannon.
All the reports were both guys were taking turns to see who could be more terrible in camp. Don’t see the issue with going with experience in that case especially for a first year HC
This was a Tom Telesco decision and AP shouldn’t get the blame for it. The way the players played around Minshew really showed that they didn’t believe he was the guy. The move for consistency with the AP hiring should have been consistent with the QB who had performed well the previous year, especially at the end of the year. Mark gave him the power and Telesco wanted to prove something, but he didn’t do AP any favors by getting him a QB in FA with almost 0 upside. I doubt AP wants to create waves and throw Telesco under the bus, but if he’s let go, I wouldn’t be surprised if some things came out.
I would have stuck with AOC just because of the vibes from last season. I think it was reasonable to predict that Minshew was a better qb, but stick with the horse that brung ya.
Well, can’t go backwards now. Minshew got plenty of opportunity here and it’s easy to move off him and onto AOC moving forward.
Hindsight is 20/20
I don’t think it would have made a difference. AOC has shown competent QB play in spurts, but there was a reason that there was an open competition in training camp and preseason. It also didn’t help that Getsy was your offensive coordinator. That guy was just awful.
Title is a little misleading in my view. I didn’t think he slammed AP here, just gave his opinion on the QB decision. I always love listening to Gannon for that reason. He doesn’t let his position with the team dictate what he’s willing to say. As hesitant as I am about there being too many voices in the room with the Raiders, I can’t help but feel that Gannon’s would be a good one to listen to.
Am I imagining this or did AP open the season saying that neither quarterback had enough to win the QB competition in camp or preseason?
Also, did Rich really “slam” him for this, or maybe was that word forced into the title like it is in most articles?
Hes absolutely right.
I told all my buddies all off season long that Minshew as a signing was alright with me (although I really thought we should have taken a shot on Fields) as a backup plan in the event we could be more competitive and AOC was holding the team back. I was adamant in my belief that AOC should have been given the first chance unless he was terrible in camp and preseason because there is more upside there than Minshew (not to say I believe AOC has franchise QB potential or anything just more than Minshew IMO). I believe the decision to not give AOC the first chance to start the season is a mistake, second biggest to the Getsy hiring that likely just made the whole QB decision that much easier to mess up/not pan out.
I still think AOC is a great guy to have on the roster. Not as a starter long term. I just don’t think he’s good enough to compete in our division and try and get into the playoffs year in and year out unless he has a power house around him (and even then it wouldn’t be a guarantee). However I do think AOC has the ability to be the best backup QB in the league. A guy that can hold down the fort in case of injury for a handful of games if need be and not sink the ship. And on his current contract that is valuable. It’s obviously less important than finding the #1 guy, but it’s still an asset while trying to find and develop that guy. Especially on his current contract. Whereas I believe Minshew is a worse player with lower upside even though AOC isn’t especially young the biggest aspect is that AOC is on a rookie mid round deal, Minshew while not making elite money is making too much for what his ideal role would be.
So I’m glad we have him, and while I don’t believe he’s the long term starter, I do think he could be a really good QB to have as a stop gap while we find and develop the next guy and in case of injury. And since that guy isn’t on the roster currently he absolutely should have been given the starting job from the start this season. Although in the end even if he was and he didn’t get the thumb injury we aren’t competing for the playoffs or anything but probably win another game or two which would honestly just be hurting us long term at this point.
Gannon said we would win 12 games with Jimmy G.
He blocked me on Twitter when I mentioned it.
Had to start minshew because of the $ I’m guessing
Does anyone think AOC can win the Super Bowl? He’s a backup.
It’s funny how an NFL legend gives AOC props, but you hater ass fans show AOC no respect.
100%
I remember when he glazed Aiden in preseason. Real recognizing real.
Hindsight…..
As were the rest of us. AP is not there yet as a head coach.
Should AOC started the season maybe, but he would have played under a horrible OC, would Garner have done better under the current OC, probably…it’s over now, just have to prepare for next season
EVEN GANNON KNOWS!
Finally! This is what I have been saying all season! Except I think it was more of a Mark Davis decision and not AP, but that’s just my opinion.
Tbf it was a QB battle and all the articles I saw said both AoC and Minshew were competing who was more shit at throwing the ball and Minshew was less terrible.
Idk. I’m not there but my thing is none of this would have happened if the Falcons didn’t fuck us over by drafting MPJ
it’s cute that he says this right now. where was he from the very beginning and also didn’t he say Jimmy g was going to win like 10 plus games or something? unfortunately with Rich Gannon, you always have to take him with a grain of salt.
Well the GM signed Gardner for a reason and AOC isn’t that good
Minshew beat him out slightly in camp so he got the job.
“I was a bit surprised that the organization decided to start Gardner Minshew,” *slams* Rich Gannon.

AOC lost the job during preseason to Minshew.
My thoughts are that AP doesnt know a damn thing about offense. I dont think he even cares about it at all. He expects any NFL offense to be able to get 4 yards a run and only throw it when you need to. Dude is really stuck in the old school.
say whatever you want now, fact is AOC didn’t beat out Minshew in pre season. period.
Slams AP is a reach
