Not sure about the squid ones, it’s possible he is a squidward enthusiast.
It’s the same as nba reference, only one or two of the nicknames apply and the rest are something some shitty local newspaper thought was clever one time
Weren’t the guys from Pensblog the ones who came up with Bing?
Darryl goes *way back*. They called him that in juniors.
God dammit, I’m calling him Squidney from now on
Where’s wizard of croz
Hockey reference is so freaking good, I’ve always thought the whole fake nickname thing was was a pretty big contrast to how tight everything else runs on the site
I mean, sure, it can be fun, but the names are also generally complete bullshit
This has to do with his legendary use of squid ink pens for signing his contracts
Bing was a Pensblog name
I thought that Darryl Creature was one name and now, for me, it is
Sid the Kid, Sid, and Captain Canada are all self explanatory.
Golden Boy is also fairly obvious given the amount of gold medals he’s won in various competitions with Team Canada.
As mentioned in this thread, Darryl is a reference to Darryl Sittler, who once scored 10 points in an NHL game. Sid’s teammates [gave him the nickname](https://www.espn.com/nhl/news/story?id=2180590) after he scored 8 in his first junior exhibition game.
Bing is a reference to the late great Bing Crosby. No information on the origin, but the PensBlog used it frequently back in the day.
The squid stuff was popularized by a few opposing cities, particularly Philadelphia. It made it into [a headline in the Philadelphia Daily News](https://x.com/Steve_Dangle/status/390852038529007616) back during peak Flyers-Penguins hatred.

The Next One is pretty obvious, too. Canadian media were using it in the handful of years leading up to him being draft eligible. [Here’s an archived example from the CBC.](https://web.archive.org/web/20070312045306/http://www.cbc.ca/maritimemagazine/archives/040118_thenextOne.html)

Creature is about his freakishly thicc legs and[ overall lower body strength](https://www.montrealgazette.com/sports/article519051.html), also mentioned in this thread.

Caps fans/bloggers have also used it, [including during the back-to-back Cup wins.](https://russianmachineneverbreaks.com/2016/03/20/heres-tj-oshie-trying-to-beat-the-tar-out-of-sidney-crosby/)
