The Montreal Canadiens are ready to return to action on Saturday night when they play in Ottawa and face the Senators. Shaun Starr and Marco D’Amico talk about Habs forward Juraj Slafkovsky and maybe it’s better for the Canadiens to put Patrik Laine on the top line next to Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield? An idea so crazy, it might work?

  1. Let's not confuse Slaf with Carbonneau or Bergeron. Surely Laine is not much of a step down from Slaf. In fact offensively it would be an upgrade. So any defensive downside will be offset by the offensive improvement.

  2. Just want to quickly point out that last week I jokingly said Hughes will wish he was a Demidov. It led you to even question the demographics of your audience on air. How effective was Hughes during the 4 nations? I'd say he was pretty much invisible. So, although I was joking about the comparison, I don't see why that was so far out of the realm of reality you'd question how old your viewership was. Hughes is a great player. I don't think he's at that top tier level either though.

  3. Unless we can be the best team in the league for the last 2 months, then it's safe to say this season is lost. It doesn't make sense to not try Laine on the top line at this point, and let Slaf earn his spot for once. If he's going to continue playing like a third liner, he shouldn't be on the top line.

  4. If you can accept theres no perfect line up with how this team is currently construction, then Laine on the top line becomes one of many options worth trying.

I think Suzuki is the only C on the team who can support Lainie's offensive potential while insulating him somewhat defensively.

    I woild interested in trying:

    Laine Suzuki Slafkovsky
    Caufield Dach Newhook

    – Laine gets to play top 6 mins with a well rounded C

    – Creating a Duo between Suzuki and Slafkovsky forces the latter into a more active role. As opposed to sitting back and trying to support Caufield and Suzuki

    – Caufield can adds more offtense to the 2nd line and we can see if Dach and Caufield can find chemistry (something MSL has yet to do)

There's a decent chance both lines will crumble, but I think its the closest thing to a functional top 6 given the available line up

  5. The reason Juraj catches so much heat imo is because anytime I see this guy in a game he’s underperforming and being a goof on the bench on the ice . Does not take it seriously . I’m sorry if you command 7 million a year which by the way he did not earn I remember Gallagher putting up multiple 30 goal seasons to get his money so he’s gotta earn it and prove he’s trying hard to get there . I get the game has to be fun but there’s a time and place to be serious earn your money earn your minutes and put the work in . I see a 20 year old millionaire who has it all and knows he’s already paid so being goofy silly don’t matter . To this fan it does!

  6. Slavkoski will never be a fighter player. he needs to learn how to use his size more no need to fight. and Slav needs to play consistant like Galaghar did since he is in the NHL. still time to developp slav.

  7. Team needs to be built up. All this talk about Laine and he has 4th most goals in team. But i guess it's easier to blame him instead asking why others don't score…

  8. Everyone says they are not worried about Slaf but yet are talking about him every day. So you are worried. That 8 million dollar contract is going to haunt this team. Hopefully we don't have too many more mistakes like that.

  9. I thought teams dictate to players what they need to do each off season? With sports trainers, strength coaches, nutrition advisors, psychologists….how can I player not improve even if he puts in 3/4 of the effort. At 7 mil a year, wouldn't that be in his contract? If not, something to consider.
