Texas Rangers sign OF Kevin Pillar, top prospect Alejandro Rosario to undergo Tommy John surgery

The Texas Rangers signed veteran outfielder Kevin Pillar to a minor league deal after Pillar said he would retire last season. Pillar is still a capable defender and hits lefties at an elite level.

One of the Rangers’ biggest development wins last year was pitching prospect Alejandro Rosario. Rosario won the Rangers’ Nolan Ryan Minor League Pitcher of the Year award after an incredible first pro season. This week Rosario felt an issue in his elbow and will likely miss the entire 2025 season with elbow surgery.

  1. Pillar isn’t a great hitter…BUT he has a .777 career OPS vs lefties and last year was .852. He’s always been a defense first outfielder. He’s no longer elite defensively, but still above average. He’s exactly the type of 4th outfielder Texas needs. If they have a weakness in the lineup, it’s hitting lefties, especially in the outfield. If he can beat out Leody, he could be a perfect platoon option in CF with Carter. Then they can move Leody and get a little bit extra cash for the deadline. Could be a great signing. We’ll see.
