Oh cool, the Islanders have even passed us. I’m finally accepting that we aren’t making the playoffs. Sucks, man.
Not mad, just disappointed. Thought after the end of season rally last year we’d be in a better position this year but alas, we’re stagnant. I think after last night I’ve officially given up hope to make the playoffs this season, just seems like the talent we have is incapable of making the push
For all the talk of the young guys being gassed…Kasper looked okay late. Had a couple shots on goal, one off the crossbar, and laid a hit all in the last 7 minutes of the game.
Not too many positives to take away from yesterday tho. Team looked okay for 2 periods but just too small and too tired to hang around with the Capitals muscle for 60 minutes. Made me wish we had Perron still
I’m not a fan of signing free agents, unless we somehow manage to land Marner.
That being said, we have a TON of pieces. Who are some realistic players we could trade for?

Lucas Raymond has 1 goal, 5 assists (6pts) and +/- of -5 in the last 11 games.
The chase for 90 is pretty much over unless he goes nuclear (21 points in 14 games) to end the year. Needs 13 points in 14 games to get to 82 (point per game mark), which hasnt been accomplished by a red wing since 2009. A month ago i thought he easily would get to it, not so sure now. But i really hope so.
He only needs 4 more points to hit a new career high of 73 tho.
Washington just ends up with awesome goaltending all the time and I for one am sick of it.

I’ll leave the more critical thinking to the smart people in here.
I am confident the Wings are poised for future success, but there is absolutely no denying Yzerman has made moves that’s hindered our ability to get their sooner. So many teams have passed us due to savvy trades and signings, it’s just incredibly frustrating. This offseason has to be a big one for us. I don’t think Marner comes here even if we offered him 7x$14.5m (could be wrong), but we need to throw bags at a true top-4 D like Gavrikov and a T6 forward, though I really don’t love the forward options aside form Marner.
JT ‘hands of stone’ Compher how are you in the NHL and can’t bury at least one of two premium chances? And Tarasenko is a beer league plug I can’t believe how fall off he’s fallen. I don’t blame Steve for the signing because he should be better, he just decided to get the bag and then free skate every other night. Never thought I would miss Perron this bad
Full season of McLellan and a couple roster improvements, plus growth from young players, and this team is a playoff team next year.
Well what an excellent first two periods. I assume the third went just as swimmingly and we got at least a point.
Well, at least we’re probably not getting eliminated on game 82.
I am on a work trip this week and didn’t get to watch the game but I will say I rather enjoy watching people attitudes do a complete 180 game over game lol
Those chances earlier in the game by Compher just really seal the deal that this team doesn’t have the finishing aspects that a playoff team needs. It’s cute and fun to have good chances but when it’s time and time again where we can’t get the finish it’s just demoralizing. Was really enjoying the majority of that game and then all of a sudden just another catastrophic implosion. The unfortunate thing is these losses are starting to hurt less and less cause the writing is on the wall.
I am definitely concerned about the Yzerplan. His drafting is top notch A+, I would put him in the top 5 in the NHL for that. Free Agency probably a D (as he has signed Kane, and then you can argue that Ghost, Lyon, Talbot were serviceable, all the rest…terrible), and trades were meek C (we did get Debrincat in a solid trade, Hronek/Bertuzzi trades were good hauls, but gave away Walman, got Petry, amongst other head scratchers). You can also question whether or not the Ilitch family is involved with decision making on high profile FAs and trades. At the end of each season over the past 3-4 years I would always comfort myself in knowing that at least we were ahead of Montreal, Ottawa, and Buffalo in our rebuild. But today, can you even say that? It seems Yzerman’s weaknesses are getting exploited and average GMs are ousting him into better positions. The constant march collapses are also interesting, I love Larkin, but it really questions his true leadership on and off the ice. He was good in the dot last night, but really has looked poor since 4 Nations (along with Raymond). We have gone through 3 coaches and we are still seeing the same result come end of year. TBH, as much as I would want the Ilitch family to sell, it ain’t happening. Yzerman should have some real pressure this offseason, and if its another dud…pandemonium in Hockeytown.
Who do we need to lock up in the next 2 offseasons? Is it just Ed?
If so, I think we should really go after Marner this offseason. We’ll have cap to spend and with cap going up we should have a decent amount of money to still round out the roster. It’s not lock we don’t have our core already locked in. If the core wasn’t locked in, I’d be against going for Marner.

I woke up this morning and just couldn’t get the standings out of my head. Tried to go back to sleep but was just so upset that habs and senators are both on the WC. Now, that Habs play islanders next, that’s a set up for failure for us. Habs win and get even more ahead with those two points. Islanders win and they also get ahead. Such a shitty situation and it’s ruining my sleep lmao
The only cool thing is we might see ASP in a wings sweater soon.
Logically, I know this year isn’t a Cup year, we aren’t some secret under seeded super power like that infamous 8 seed Nashville team. But it’s been so long since I’ve seen playoff hockey in the D, it’s starting to approach a significant portion of my life, this drought is. My siblings’ kids have never seen playoff Wings hockey. This city needs to be reminded of what things used to be.

It seems like the Wings are outhustled every game, even the games they win.
You see other teams, from the opening faceoff to final whistle just dialed in, every shift is moving. Then you watch the Wings and it’s like, alright, you guys gonna bend your knees and dig in when you skate? It’s weird.
It is my hope Steve Yzerman makes some nice changes to the roster this off-season. The caveat is twofold:
1) Can he move any of these players? In other words, would another team want any of these players? When I say these players, I am talking about Holl, Compher, Copp, Tarasenko, and Eric G.
2) Is Steve Yzerman willing to buyout 1 or 2 players? Does believe he can get better replacements? Otherwise, will he do it?
Right now, too many of the above are set to return next season.
Does the roster look different at all next season? I hope so for sure. More youth? Danielson making this roster would be nice. But the young man (whom I like) will really need to look like Kasper did in this past pre-season.
NGL I would love a discreet tank job given our schedule – we aren’t far from having like a top 8 pick
Shut down guys like Kane, Larkin, etc and give ASP/Danielson/Lombardi some run (don’t bring up Cossa to get shelled)
Young guys all get 9 games of NHL experience and a few may show out, and wings get a top 8 pick with a better chance of moving up in lottery
Would rather do this then play the usual old dudes and end up with like pick 12 anyway
I’m past the point in getting too upset with the outcomes of games the rest of the season. I mean if the wings don’t want to fill my calendar up and take my money for playoffs again that is ok, I guess.
However, I’m genuinely excited for Todd to have a full off-season and training camp with this team next year. I think he’s done a good job so far and having the time to implant and fine tune the style he wants us to play is exciting for me.
Who would’ve guessed at the beginning of the season we’d be saying:
“I wish we had Copp and Petry in the lineup tonight”.
I’m so jealous of montreals rebuild. They were in the cup final like 5 years ago. Hit rebuild, already have great pieces with the best one still coming and are back in a playoff spot already.
