Why Texas Rangers signing Patrick Corbin shows owner Ray Davis won’t invest in winning

The Texas Rangers signed pitcher Patrick Corbin to a 1-year MLB deal after suffering injuries to starters Cody Bradford and Jon Gray. Corbin has been by far the worst starting MLB pitcher for the last five seasons. Better free agent starters Kyle Gibson and Lance Lynn were still on the market and could’ve been signed while staying under the luxury tax, but Chris Young opted for a cheaper and significantly worse option.

Rookies Jack Leiter and Kumar Rocker will have to beat Corbin for a rotation spot, showing the Rangers won’t simply hand out starting jobs even in the case of an injury crisis.

  2. Honestly, Brice. Corbin was signed to give innings, that was all, end stop. INNINGS! On a rotation littered with older injury prone pitchers. It's not hard to understand.

  3. I dont understand how theyd rather use Corbin than Houser. I know i talk a lot about houser. And I know hes really just fine, but hes better than Corbin and hes… like I feel hes safe

  9. The idea is to get thru innings until Gray and Bradford are back midseason. Makes a lot more sense to spend around a million on a proven innings guy you plan to cut in July than 5-10 million on a Gibson or such.

  12. Nah, I've seen Keuchel in a Rangers uniform before, so there were worse! At least Corbin will give innings, which I can say something Rocker is not gonna provide with such status quo, a day with most likely bullpen less taxed is something positive😂(though I do want a Monty reunion but as of now cheap innings is the single most important thing, I still believe resetting the CBT status can help years to come, of course barring the need for immediate help and go over the tax)

  13. Leiter just did an interview yesterday where he's talking about how his sinker has been a good pitch..an also stating he's been touching 98 99 an 100 mph…so you might be off w your statements. Leiter is going to be good this year..MARK MY WORDS

  15. Rather sign this guy they give up all of our prospects for one year of some guy that just wants top dollar that’s gonna leave the injuries might not be that serious and I guess there’s some time to see exactly where our guys are at. It’s a good move.

  16. Corbin is a guy you can throw in there for your bullpen days, he will eat innings and if your offense is good, this move will be fine. I don't think they are panicking, I think they were simply just grabbing another guy who was cheap to alleviate some pressure off your rotation and young pitchers. They want to give Leiter and Rocker time to develop, especially in their confidence and consistency.

People act like this guy wasn’t the owner when we won it 2 years ago , I appreciate Ray Davis , he’s a billionaire he’s not worried about his own wealth being affected with some of these signings ,he’s looking out for the team as a whole , just because you got the space and money to make a move doesn’t mean you do , could be leaving room for a mid season trade no one knows , I chose to be a fan and trust the higher ups that just won a chip 2 years ago , not dig every move they make
