That shitty coaching style didn’t work in Philly either huh? Well Hopefully Lavi soon follows.
Someone say it, and I’ll agree.
To think some on here want him back because he will keep the players “accountable”. Please no.
Fuck it, I’d bring him back just for the press conferences.
This is Tort’s career in a nutshell. He’s brought in to whip weak teams into shape and give them confidence and work ethic. Once the identity is established, the team grows tired of him riding them and he’s pushed out. Then a players coach comes in to be nice to the team and they get weak again.
Sound familiar?
I’m not saying Torts could turn this team around. But I’m also not saying he couldn’t turn this team around.
Torts basically telling the media that he wasn’t interested in coaching the rest of the season since his team sucks was absolutely hilarious.
Get him on TNT to expose Rangers upper management, stat.
I’d have to think his handling of Michkov has something to do with this. He’s been extremely critical of his play despite him playing a good offensive game. But you look at other young teams with budding superstars (Sharks, Hawks) letting them play 20 minutes a night whereas Michkov gets benched often and only plays ~15min a night.
That said I think Torts is a very good coach (maybe not in today’s NHL) and Michkov was better for it as his defensive play was pretty bad.
lol NO THANKS. Lavi with younger players sure, deployment horrible. Torts, would just absolutely RUIN careers, run guys out of here just to win somewhere else sure he’d bench guys which is GREAT. But he’s just another fukin retread coach. No. No. No.
Why is this on a rangers thread?
If the roster were to go unchanged, then maybe Torts would be a nice kick in the ass, but I don’t think that’ll be the case. There’s no reason to “punish” a roster that might only have one or two of the culprits of that mid-season collapse still around.
That said, my take’s mostly based off his reputation as a hardass. Obviously the Flyers aren’t great, but they have sneaky good underlying 5v5 numbers; they’re mostly held back a bit by a lack of talent and really poor goaltending. Same with Andrew Brunette in Nashville, although their issue is more an awful SH%. I wanted Brunette instead of Lav last go around, and I think he’d be a great assistant at the very least.
David Carle is still my top choice though, as unlikely as it is.
Let’s get him. It’s honestly what our deadbeat team needs – someone to come in and blowtorch their asses with some accountability
I mean…it’s worth some discussion
You could call it a retread, but the only Ranger from Torts last stint here left is Kreider, and I don’t think there’s much gas left in that tank, much as it pains me to say.
This team, this core, often comes out looking uninspired, complacent, often just happy not to get scored on in the first 2 minutes. Torts would change that.
We’re bad at scoring and have 2 actual top 4 D men on the roster. Changing the coach won’t do anything about that
Matter of time!
Miss his hilarious press conferences though
You people are insane to want Torts back.
He has one shtick and it doesn’t work for long.
I’d rather have a coach who isn’t more concerned about blocking shots than scoring goals.
I realize we all want to kick this team in the ass and Torts would do that, but he is not going to lead this team back to a cup.
The short term memory in this thread is wild. I fear everyone has been so (rightfully) disgusted with the lack of effort this team had this year that everyone now wants the extreme opposite type of coach with Torts. I love Torts and there are obviously some things he does well but come on this man has not been successful as a coach in like a decade lmao. His coaching style is outdated in general mixed in with struggling to develop prospects. This would be an awful hire.
Love torts. However, his blocking shots style really wears out over time. Team needs scoring at 5v5. Enough with retreads
Very obvious.
I am not sure what the pay is these days and if Torts would like the idea, but I would love to see him coach NCAA hockey. Maybe goes to Maine, if Barr moves on and gets a pro job?
I’d rather take a chance on Peca as head coach.
If Torts is good at one thing it’s getting his team to work hard. For that reason I think he should be considered. Philly punched above their weight class last year and this year they can’t get a save but every time I’ve watched them they seem to pressure hard on the forecheck and do a lot of the little things that our team doesn’t do.
OMG I hope the Rangers don’t rehire Torts
Gritty named as interim coach and GM.
He lasted longer than I thought he would down there
Now do Lavi
**Folks in this sub:** man im so tired of hiring the same old recycled nhl coaches with dinosaur tactics
**Same Folks in this sub:** Drury go get torts!
I expect him at the helm by 10:30 EST. Let’s make a push.
Lets just get this over with so we can look ahead to our next head coach search in 2026
While I believe this team desperately needs new ideas and a new approach after the debacle of this season, I also think Torts is exactly what this team could use. Unless Cooper or Sullivan become available (both highly unlikely) I don’t have an issue with watching this rerun again.
No more dinosaur ‘old timey hockey’ coaches please. Haven’t we learned our lesson(s)?
Remember when he benched Jagr in the playoffs? Torts is a great press conference but not a good coach.
Let’s get him back – as coach and GM.
LOL!!!
Bring him here.
Torts is a great coach for getting the most out of minimal talent, but a terrible coach at optimizing high end talent and young skill players. See Marian Gaborik and a young developing Chris Kreider. The “black and blueshirt” teams had as much success as they did because they had prime Lundqvist and a bunch of third and fourth liners willing to throw their bodies in front of pucks to win games 2-1. That is not the makeup of this team, nor will it be going forward. Sure we need to get tougher as a team, but we also need to let star players like Panarin put up 100 points a season and for young guys like Berard, Othmann and eventually Perrault to get ice time and develop. Torts is not the guy for that. Hard pass.
I love torts because he tells the truth. He will defend his guys until the end but will tell the truth if they are playing bad. Kind of like saying I could say my brother is a jerk but you can’t. He is the anti Aaron boone. Torts holds his players accountable.
Has Brooksie commented yet?
Holy hell, I do NOT want to see Torts back in NYC.this was meant to just be another rangers-adjacent post. I’d love to see torts in a broadcast booth.
Bring him back and he’ll treat Panarin like he did Gaborik.
