Mike Green and James Pearce not part of Joe Marino top 15 DEs
April 7, 2025
Did anyone catch Joe Marino's podcast breaking down his top 15 DEs for the Bills? He left out Mike Green and James Pearce entirely. I know Green has some offield issues now but I never heard anything about Pearce. Most boards I see have those 2 as day 1 DEs.
Mike Green doesn’t fit because of culture. Slander McDermott if you wish, but you can’t deny the culture that McDermott has created.
We credit Beane with cap wizardry but never give Sean his flowers when mentioning guys signing below market deals, which you could argue applied to guys like Milano and Taron, and applies this season to guys like Bernard, benford, and Rousseau.
Marino doesn’t like pierce because of his lack of bend, being undersized, and being a liability against the run. He acknowledges his athleticism and burst, but sees those traits as only partially making up for his weaknesses. He sees him as not being a fit for the bills specifically.
I think his rankings reflect the lens of what the bills want/need which is good for us. We don’t need a straight line pass rushers, we need somebody who compresses the pocket which requires bend or power. His value through another team’s needs might differ, but Marino doesn’t want him, and by his assessment, neither do I
Both have major major red flags. Green with a SA accusation and there are reports that Pearce may have the biggest character concerns of anyone in the draft. Allegedly Tenn couldnt wait to be done with him this year and a HS teammate reportedly said the dude is legit crazy
I was a huge Mike green guy until I heard his off field stuff. As a player he has real potential. James Pearce I understand him not being everyone’s cup of tea.
Personally I would love to see a player with some bend and explosiveness compliment Groot on the edge. The idea of taking somebody like Landon Jackson at 30 doesn’t move me much at all. Another oversized Edge who doesn’t have great bend and don’t have many pass rush moves just seems meh at this point.
