Mel Kiper on James Pearce
“The defending Super Bowl champs lost some key parts of their defense in free agency, including edge rusher Josh Sweat. Being able to get after the quarterback is important for Vic Fangio’s defense, and there’s a glaring void now on the edge. There are mixed opinions around the league on whether Pearce is a first-rounder, but he has the traits to develop into a speedy disruptor in the right system. He had 17.5 sacks over the past two seasons and ranked second in the nation in pressure rate last season (19.0%).”

Mel Kiper on Kevin Winston Jr.
“The Eagles could close Round 2 by staying in state. Winston played only two games last season after suffering a knee injury in September, but he had 40 tackles and five pass breakups the prior year. He could help replace C.J. Gardner-Johnson, who was traded to Houston. If GM Howie Roseman wanted to keep his offensive line strong and potentially even plan ahead for an eventual Lane Johnson replacement, there are some decent O-line prospects still on the board, too. Boston College’s Ozzy Trapilo and LSU’s Emery Jones Jr. could be worth a look.”

  1. I just don't understand your narrative about Stewart. He fits the Eagles although I did think he was closer to 280 and measured at 6-5, 267. Not sure if he shed some to run a great 40 time (which he did) . Shemar Stewart WAS productive, it's a little lazy to just go by sack numbers, watch the tape and he had 39 pressures (Josh Sweat made a long career here out of that) . I saw a guy who was very good against the run, was moved around a lot (which Fangio likes to do partly in lieu of blitzing) and still got a lot of pressure on the QB, he has a good motor. And people keep repeating this knock on him. He is a workout warrior and actually quite productive.

" But Stewart has tantalizing analytical metrics that rope scouts right back in. Despite his meager production, his average time to first pressure last season was 2.43 seconds, the best mark in the FBS (Carter clocked in at 2.46 seconds)."

    From espn

Stewart said he has been asked by coaches, scouts and personnel executives about his statistical profile. He pointed to the Aggies' depth and opposing quarterbacks getting a rid of the ball quickly to avoid pressure from the Texas A&M front. The Aggies' defense was 22nd in the FBS in pressure rate (40.3%) despite one of the lowest blitz rates (19.3%, which ranked 115th).

"I wasn't a sack-chasing warrior," Stewart said. "I just wanted to become the best player for my team. And sometimes the stats don't show that. Sometimes, I have to play dead to rights, and sometimes I just couldn't finish or just couldn't get there in time."

  2. Pearce is a project that would be 5th in the OLB rotation. Winston immediate starter at safety. If he didn't get hurt last year he would be Safety #1 this draft.

  3. Pierce is a bad pick, real birds fans know we don’t need a edge! Passing on Nolan would be crazy! You don’t pass on a great player in a position of need for a project player that would be a 5th stringer!!!

  4. Why not get a bunch more pics more 2nd or 3rd rounders is fine with me but id love Starks or Emmanwori but oh effin well. I see us getting a TE somewhere and DT and OL. Thats what normally happens

  5. Solid D. Which is what I expect from Mel. That's been his MO for decades. Biggest needs atm: Safety to replace CJGJ and OL depth, hopefully finding Lane's replacement in a few years with a few years to develop him. We have depth at Edge thanks to Ojulari and Uche joining us, which Vic is high on both. Another Edge later in the draft for depth may not be bad, but its not a big priority. Find a guy that feels he was overlooked for several rounds and has a chip on his shoulder, those guys seem to make great defenders.
