[Slater] Sean Marks on Cam Johnson: “He’s a high character guy who you’re gonna see consistency from every day. We’re in zero hurry to move on from players like that. I think the next step for Cam is to take on more of a leadership role. We just talked about that this morning with him.”

> “There was no shortage of teams calling on him… But I can’t think of a pathway that Cam doesn’t fit in… He’s a high character guy who you’re gonna see consistency from every day. We’re in zero hurry to move on from players like that… I think the next step for Cam is to take on more of a leadership role. We just talked about that this morning with him. He carries a big voice, he’s well-respected with his teammates. They love him, and he’s about the right stuff. If you wanna look at, what is a Net? That’s what you want.”
We need good players and he’s a good player. High character guy too and he wants to be here
Sounds like unless they get a pretty decent haul, they are more than happy to build with a guy like that on the team. He is a really solid third option, and a great role model for the youth they will be drafting.

Marks is talking about the season exit interview. Every team does one with every player.
“Zero hurry” does not equal “not shopping.”
Cam J is a high character guy and the Nets are clearly prioritising players with those qualities after the Big 3 debacle.
Dariq, Noah and Jalen are all considered high character guys according to Sean Marks and that was a factor in them being drafted by the Nets.
I have been impressed with CJ this season. I didn’t care for him in his first 18 months with the Nets at all.
As we might select five players in the draft it would seem to be smart for Cam J to be a mentor to these rookies.
However, every player has their price and CJ is on a descent value contract. He will be an attractive option for teams looking to upgrade but Sean Marks is gonna be asking for at least two good quality first round picks.
To compete with the champion as the underdog you have to show special “grit”. You have to outhustle and outwork the opponent.
Blah, blah, blah.
Actually, the first thing little David did was negotiate a huge success fee from his team owner (failure meant death anyway). Then he carefully selected three stones. Then he trash-talked Goliath to get under his skin.
He sprinted right up to a wide open three 3 seconds into the shot clock- the big man was planted in the paint as always. He aimed between the eyes- a miss might still rim in.
He certainly hustled the Philistine Phreak…
I’ve seen great grit in the playground, and in high school and college games. In the NBA you need elite tactics and skill.
The only reason I’m okay with keeping CamJ is because we need to get ready to compete in 2027. Unless we’re trading Cam for a piece we know has the potential to be as good as him then I don’t see a reason to trade him in such a haste since we’re already the least talented team in the league while every other tank rival has at least one player if not multiple as good as CamJ. He’ll be the mentor our rookies will need coming into the league next year.
Nets Mantra: Buy Low, Sell Low
We are the Mother Theresa of the trade market
Maybe we are going to make him GM then he can trade himself away.
It was clear when we didn’t flip CJ at the deadline that the FO sees him as a building block. I think that’s the right decision too
For all of those that think we’re tanking next year. Here’s your answer that will not be the case.
