A Letter to NFL GMs by Ashton Jeanty | The Players’ Tribune

If Carter and Hunter are gone at 4 I'm all-in on Jeanty. Imagine D coordinators pulling their hair out all week figuring out how to stop a backfield of Maye and Jeanty… good luck. Then they can hopefully find a serviceable starting LT in the 2nd RD (Conerly, Ersery). Also the last line is one of the coldest lines I've ever heard and simple logic for the people who have devalued the Rb position to the point they think it's irrelevant.

"It’s TACKLE football … you know what I’m saying?

I’d draft the guy they can’t tackle."

  1. How to stop a backfield if Maye and Jeanty? Stack the box and send the house. There’s nothing outside at the moment that terrifies you unless Diggs is the guy he was 2 years ago

  2. Hopefully the Bears are going to read this letter and decide to trade up to 4 for him. As far as the Patriots goes, there should be no scenario, where the front office should even consider taking him.

  3. Can we at least wait until Maye does something noteworthy in the NFL before calling him paired with any player a real threat? I’m excited too, but we haven’t seen much yet.

  4. That letter got me fired up!! You know what screw it, throw #4 at Jeanty and go get Conerly!

  5. Honestly I’ve been saying I wouldn’t mind this. Go get a guaranteed blue chip player. But if Campbell is the pick I get it

  6. This draft is so deep at RB that if they take Jeanty at 4 before addressing much bigger needs at more critical positions then people need to be fired

  7. 15 starting quality running backs in this draft, but sure, take the guy with a ton of wear and tear already that played a lower level of competition and didn’t look special in the playoffs. Best case you get Zeke Elliot, with everything that entails.

  8. Even generational talents at RB hardly move the needle in terms of WAR. The only less valuable position on the field is center. If the Pats take Jeanty at 4, the entire personnel department should be fired immediately.

Thankfully, they aren’t going to take him.

  9. I really don’t see the Patriots taking him, running back is not a position of need. You have needs on OL, DL, WR, K to say the least. Vrabel has talked about taking the best available. Who knows maybe one or more of his scouts say take this kid, OL is deep we will get one in Round 2 or trade back into Round 1. Stranger things have happened.

I don’t see it happening though. There’s too many holes. I will say I do love the confidence all the great ones have it.

  10. I know there is no chance of it happening but I would love it if the Pats grabbed Jeanty. Kid is an absolute stud.

  11. Yes. Then go tackle r2 or in the first round next year. Unless they’re in love with another prospect. I just want them to pick someone with confidence at 4

  12. I guess, if you want to be as irrelevant as the Giants when they drafted Saquon. The line is more important than the RB and you should never spend a high pick on an RB without the line.

  13. Rather have Tyler Warren if we are going off the wall.

Jeanty did awful against Penn State. All his games were against weaker teams.

Fumbled twice and they dont look as bad cause he got yards when the game was over

  14. the giants are going to take him, now that they are not paying daniel jones 42 million they can start handing it off again.

  15. If they truly want to go best player available, he may be it after Carter and Hunter. Maybe jalon walker and Tyler Warren too.

  16. Didn’t one of the guys in front office say we’d draft best player available? If hunter and carter are both gone I’d say jeanty is the best player left

  17. RB value has never been lower since everyone realized they’re nothing without a good O-line soooooo

  18. This kid will be elite. Feels weird being at 4 & being able to draft BPA who will light it up right away. We’ll never end up with a guy like this cause we too scared. My hype train is coming to a sinking reality but we sure are gonna regret it. The cherry on top is he’s gonna ball out on a team that arguably needs O- Line more than us but we’re taking a chance on a Tackle. Entertainment business after all sure would be nice to have an awesome player like this for once..

  19. He is one of 3 blue chip players in this draft. I think they’re getting Campbell – checks too many boxes – though.

  20. I don’t think there is a scenario that makes sense for the Pats to draft Jeanty at #4.

I think if they trade down to #8-12, Campbell, Membou, gone, then you start deciding between Jeanty, Warren and McMillan.

I think Jeanty is probably the biggest need, but I think Warren is the bigger impact player for the future. McMillan a distant 3rd.

By trading down, they should gain at least a second round pick which they could use to move up and guarantee themselves one of Simmons or Conerly Jr.

They could also combine their 3rds to move up for a WR.

Something like this, I’d be happy with:

    #11 Jeanty
    #25 Simmons
    #46 Noel

Would be adding 3 key pieces to a young offense. Jeanty is the best RB, Simmons arguably the best LT, and I’d put Noel in the top 5 for WR.

The Pats have to draft a LT. Not taking one at 4 puts them at risk for not getting one later. Unfortunately there aren’t any LTs worth the 4 pick, so they will likely have to reach for Campbell who may end up at LG.

Bad year for a top pick.
